WANTED: New Member for D159 Board of Education

John Troy's resignation leaves an open seat on the District 159 Board of Education. Interested parties should submit letters of intent or resumes to the Board no later than Aug. 8.

With the resignation of former District 159 Board of Education President John Troy and the shift of VP Patrick Markham into his role, the Board of Education currently has an empty seat. Without the ability to elect a new board member until the next general election, the board will appoint a member to fill Troy's seat until the public can have their pick with a vote.

Members of the Mokena community who would like to apply should submit a letter of intent or resumé no later than Wednesday, Aug. 8, to the D159 Board of Education. Interviews for the open seat will be conducted in August by the Board of Education, with final appointment coming sometime later in the month.

The person chosen to fill the seat will serve on the board until April 2013, when the general election takes place. The person chosen will be able to seek reelection during the general election.

For more information about the open seat, interested parties should contact the Mokena Public School District 159 at (708) 342-4900.

Come on, with all the back room wheeling and dealing, i'm sure that seat is spoken for. The Troy/Markham machine is all about power and placing themselves in cushy govt. spots.

We need to have the appearance of propriety. We have to request nominees and vet them. Then we give the seat to our crony buddy. Little Chicago.

Little Chicago indeed, right down to the quality of the public school system that people will only send their kids to if they can't afford a better option.

My opinion of Mr. Markham and Mr. Troy is that they have done a great job in curtailing unnecessary spending by the school district. If I were on the Board, I wouldn't be so kind. I would vote NO to just about everything, for one reason, people are attempting to leave this little hamlet by the droves, and it is because of high taxes caused by 159 and Lincolnway. There are many more For Sale signs than green lawns and these houses have school age children. I speak as an older person and say that the taxes should go down as the school population and home values decline, but they aren't. Sorry situation, thank you.

What an exciting time for Mokena to break the mold and show other villages how it should be done! With the finance position open, the Board has a chance to hire Troy for $39K! It’s good enough for a starting teacher so it should be good enough for a starting administrator. Win-win. The district saves 40 grand—each year!--over the old guy & Mr. Troy gets his dream job. Both Troy and Markham have said they’re about fiscal responsibility and finding new solutions: here’s the perfect chance to show the world what administrative salaries ought to be.
