Hey lady,
1. You know nothing of this story except this news blotter that doesn't explain a thing into it.
2. In now way was this suicide.
3. And finally, no one cares your opinion in this, do you believe his family and friends want to see you saying stuff like this when they already have to go through the injuries and surgeries? As one of these people I don't appreciate it so please keep your opinions to yourself

1. True.
2. I don't think it's attempted suicide either. Sounds more like a drunk kid who should have stayed where he was.
3. Public forum and she has a right to an opinion just like everyone else. When one gets arrested, it is public record. Story says he has non-life threatening injuries so he can't be too bad off. Hope he is on the road to recovery and learned a lesson.

Let's not forget what the driver of the car that him must be going through!

You know what, this story is not even accurate what so ever. As a good friend of Shane, I would appreciate it if people who do not know him or the story would keep their opinions and naive comments to themselves. He did NOT get arrested, and who is any one to judge "how bad off" he is? It is not your life nor is it relevant to your life, therefore you have no idea. It's such a shame that people are so quick to judge other people's misfortune. It makes me sick.

But it is relevant to my life. I am a taxpayer and contribute to the salaries of the police and EMS. I am also a driver. So glad he was not behind the wheel of a car and that I was not the driver that hit him.

Shane was NOT arrested it was false info. Your right everyone does have their own opinion when they are presented with the correct information. As for the life threatening injuries, not life threatening but life altering. He was a very lucky young man but still has sustained injuries that will not allow him to go back to college this spring. He is a good kid that just happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. This article was completely FALSE!!!!

He did not step in front of a car...He was walking on a street with no sidewalks or lights and was struck by the car. The police officer who was there on the scene only took the drivers story because Mr. McEldowney didn't remember anything caused by a severe concussion. And of course the driver told the police he stepped in front of the car because otherwise he knows he would be in a world of trouble.. Just want to make it clear since this was such a screwed up and false report!!! And again, Mr. McEldowney was NOT arrested. I appreciate what you do for a living Carol, I am glad there are people like you that are out there for those who need it.

Dear Carolb - although I respect your decision to keep up on current events & provide 'guidance' to those at risk for suicide - you obviously do not have the facts of the case or any on the kid mentioned in the police blotter. 19 is still a kid, and kids make mistakes. You however, as an adult and "trained" professional, should know better than to make slanderous accusations on a blog - especially after many have stated that the article was factually in accurate. Aren't you lucky that the Frankfort Patch doesn't require you to list your last name and give the block that you live on? I'm sure that if GOD FORBID a member of your family had made a mistake, you wouldn't mind a bit having complete strangers throw accusations that someone in your family was exhibiting a - how did you put it - a 'classic means of suicide'? I suggest you reexamine your comments, because I am not the 1st person to recognize that you were not only judgemental but completely misinformed in this case. Just because you can blow smoke on a blog about some "training" you claim to have received, does not make it right to accuse SOMEONE YOU HAVE NEVER MET of being suicidal. Get your own house in order before attacking anyone else's child.

Now Rose calm down Carol did take a 2-day course to be an "ASIST trained suicide interventionist" Obviouslly she thinks things out like Shane should of known he was going to get hit because he had to see the headlights. Because seeing headlights means your going to get hit and you have the ability to react in a timely fashion and if a car is coming from behind you, you should be able to see headlights and just be able to do something about it. I really appreciate her comebacks to defend her ignorance by further insulting this family and insisting they need mental health care for him. She probably lives in a glass house if ya know what I mean. She has the mental health issue if she cannot even step back and she how completely ignorant her comments are. I reread all of her comments they are irrogant and insulting. Or maybe she knows is the driver and came up with this in their defense..Speaking of the driver who hit a 19 year old college student walking on the side of the road...was that person drinking? high? on the phone? reaching for a cig? putting on makeup for a booty call? why was the driver out at 1:45 am? was the driver at fault? or was this a very unfortunate accident? As for the article...REALLY! Where are the facts...his name?...not arrested..I would assume the injuries he had were life threatening or simply getting hit by a car at 35mph is life threatening. Where are the facts on the driver or once again just a really bad accident? God bless everyone involved.

what does don't take the easy way out mean? should he not get the reconstruction in his knees? does he have a choice? are you implying this young man has a choice in all the surgeries he has to have or are you implying that he has a choice in all the physical therapy? Im very confused by your comment.

Commenters,

It has come to my attention that there are several comments stating that Shane was not arrested.

The information in the blotter item above was taken directly from official reports distributed by the Will County Sheriff's Department.

Accurate, factual reporting is of the utmost importance to Patch. I am currently in the process of following up with the public affairs division of the sheriff's office to confirm the report I received. Multiple calls have been made to the office's press representative and I hope to clarify any potential inaccuracies very soon.

Thank you all for reading Patch!

Lala,

I put in multiple calls to the Sheriff's Department on Friday, but did not receive a response. I will, of course, continue to call on Monday, and hopefully will have some information soon.

Thanks for reading Patch!

Carol once again you like to show off your know it all attitude. You are so irrogant and insulting you do not know this child or his family so your false accusations are crazy sounding. It must be really hard for anyone to hold a conversation with such a self righteous individual like you. nobody needs your advice so just shut up and how do you act like you know this family? take your 4day card and burn it you don't need to be talking to anyone with mental health issues. go volunteer at PAWS because grooming and feeding animals will not be psychologically damaging by your ignorance. And no Ms Scheir did not confirm the arrest please reread her statement......let me spell it out for you. ....she simply states where she received her information and due to the comments had put in calls to Will County to clairify any misunderstandings or false information that has been given to her to do her job as a reporter. And by the way I NEVER try to be insulting to anyone its not in my character but you are just unreal.

I've removed my posts and apologize to those who were offended by them. I don't know anyone involved. My best to you all, especially the young man who was injured. It appears everyone agrees on that part of the report.

Lala, what you don't know is that a citation is like getting a speeding ticket, which is a form of arrest...have you or anyone you know gotten a speeding ticket??? If so then guess what??? YOU WERE ARRESTED!!!! So shut up with your truth!!!!! Anna, you need to make this story sound way more dramatic then it really is. I guess citation doesn't sound as dramatic as ARREST so use whatever word you want for your piddlely paper!! And for you Lala get a life.

Really, shut up? Get a life? How old are you? Anna is merely printing what she is being told by the police. What YOU don't know is there IS a difference between a citation and being arrested. A traffic citation is not the same as a formal arrest. A formal arrest would include informing the suspect he was under arrest and taking him to jail or a police station. That could also take place in a hospital. If he were just issued a citation the police would have noted that in their report. I am sure they would not want to risk being involved in a law suit.

Wrong again...your not even worth the my time to try to explain how this works, so you have a great day and maybe find something else to do rather then write on these kinds of blogs. Do not waste your time (because obviously you have way to much of it) responding because I am done with you and your ignorance. This is someone's family and they know the TRUTH as you but it. @Anna, I do realize your just doing your job and I do apologize.

You are both right in a way. It's technical. If you are arrested and locked up, they can only keep you a short time (usually 48 hours) without charging you. They file a complaint against you in court listing the crimes you are alleged to have committed. If the judge agrees that there was sufficient cause to charge you, the judge signs the complaint, you appear before the judge and are formally charged. Once you are charged, they can keep you in jail until you answer the charges and go to trial (if you plead not guilty) or proceed to sentencing (if you plead guilty). But if you promise to come back, the judge can let you out (with or without bail) while all of that's going on. Now, for certain less serious charges, the police are allowed to shortcut this procedure. They write the charges on a citation with the day and time you must come to court, you sign a promise to appear, and they let you go home. Some places consider this an arrest and it will go on your arrest record, others don't. For some offenses you might be allowed to check a 'guilty' box on the citation and pay a fine like a traffic ticket. For others, you might have to go before the judge. So, it sounds like Miss Anna is telling you that this young man received a citation and notice to appear on charges of underage drinking and pedestrian under the influence.
