Electrical Aggregation Forum Tonight: The Power is Yours

The village is holding a special forum tonight to educate residents and small business owners on electrical aggregation, which they hope could cut electricity bills and which will be on the March 20 ballot.

Do you want to learn about an upcoming ballot question that could help you save on your electrical bill?

If so, come to the Mokena Community Park District Administration Center at 7 p.m. today for a public forum on electrical aggregation.

Voters in the March 20 election will see a referendum asking whether the village should pursue electrical aggregation. A "yes" vote basically gives the village permission to shop around on residents' behalf for a better electricity price than ComEd offers.

After a presentation on what electrical aggregation is, village staff will answer attendees' questions, both general questions and specifics about their particular bill.

"All that 'opt in, opt out' can get kind of confusing," Village Administrator John Downs said. "We'll be there to kind of walk people through that."

If voters shoot the referendum down...

Nothing will change. You will have the same two options you have now: buying from ComEd or arranging your own electricity.

If voters approve it...

If voters approve the referendum AND it still turns out ComEd offers the cheapest price, nothing will change. You'll have the same options mentioned above.

If voters approve the referendum AND the village finds a cheaper price elsewhere, you will have two options: going with the price the village found or arranging your own electricity through another company (which could include ComEd).
