I-80 and LaGrange Among the Most Crash-Prone Intersections: IDOT
Junctions at Cicero and 127th in Alsip and Lincoln Highway in Matteson are in the Top 10, according to IDOT's 2010 crash figures.
An off ramp at Interstate 80 and LaGrange Road is the most crash-prone intersection in the south suburbs, according to data released by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
The westbound off-ramp from I-80 onto LaGrange Road, which leads into Orland Park and Tinley Park, recorded 56 crashes in 2010. That's the second highest crash total in the six-county metro area.
The highest crash figure is 63, recorded at Stony Island Avenue and South Chicago Avenue on Chicago's South Side.
State Police Sgt. Jim Powell told Sun-Times Media in a report today that people stopping to judge LaGrange Road traffic are causing the accidents: “People stop, and there’s two turning lanes with a sign out there that says no turn on red except right lane.”
The other south suburban intersections on IDOT's crash list, ordered by rank, include:
- 3rd, Cicero Avenue and 127th Street in Alsip, 53 accidents
- 10th, Lincoln Highway at Cicero Avenue in Matteson, 46 accidents
- 12th, Bolingbrook Drive at I-55 southbound in Bolingbrook, 45 accidents
- 15th, Weber Road at I-55 southbound in Romeoville, 43 accidents
- 19th, 159th Street and River Oaks Drive at Torrence Avenue in Calumet City, 41 accidents
- 20th, 127th Street at Paulina Street in Calumet Park, 41 accidents

I really don't understand the last sentence ; “People stop, and there’s two turning lanes with a sign out there that says no turn on red except right lane.” Why not do the inexpensive thing and change the sign to read NO TURN ON RED for either lane. After all it will save money just like not fixing the roads just put up a sign that says BUMP or WATER ON ROAD. I don't know how many times I have had people beeping their horns because I would not turn right on a red or move out into the intersection and endanger myself and others so they (the more important people) could make a turn 10 or 15 seconds early.

Drivers like you are the kind that make drivers like me wish the NASCAR practice called "bump drafting" was street legal.

Sorry Alan. While I do not recommend bumping cars who aren't turning on right when its allowed, it is equally wrong and dangerous not to turn right on red when its allowed and safe to turn. The whole purpose of allowing a right turn on red is to help aleviated back ups and keep the traffic flowing. So you aren't doing any service to those waiting to turn right, and in some cases, you could be doing more harm then good. Who knows, if the traffic is back up because people don't want to turn when they can, you could be preventing emergency vehicles from getting through, or holding up someone trying to get to a hospital to visit a loved one about to die, or maybe even holding up someone who is almost home and is desperating trying to get there to use the bathroom before having an accident. So please, consider turning right when you're at a red light and its safe to turn because you can't just assume others waiting behind you don't have a really important reason to turn too. We aren't all just in a hurry for no reason. Sometimes having that extra minute or seconds can really make all the difference for really important stuff too. Thanks

I am sure your Insurance company would like to know that Mike. We all wonder why our auto insurance cost keep going up?

Alan and Mike, you're both wrong -but I do understand your respective points of view.
Alan, by sitting at a red light at which a right turn is legal (and assuming you have a clear shot at it in traffic), you should go -especially if there is someone behind you. In the end your reasoning of safety may make the roads less safe by ticking off multiple drivers (like Mike -and me) behind you. Even if nobody is behind you, you would just be mucking up our air more than you would if you just get going.
Mike, I hear ya brother, but of course we can't go around tapping cars. So, best not to even think about it.

Yep JP I will agree that IF I was making the turn and the road was clear I would go, But the ones who do the beeping usually are doing it when I am not turning and we are all on a 2 lane road with them half on the shoulder, I wont for any reason other than an emergency vehicle move out into traffic. and for Sue N. Your just going to have to hold it a bit longer.

Ever since Red Light Photo Enforced Became the biggest rip off, I hardly ever turn on red when it is allowed. Im so scared I will get a ticket. I have and they are expensive. The red light photo enforced light I feel have caused more accidents and frustration for the people behind me. Sorry but if your in that much of a hurry grow up and leave extra time for your destination! Accident Free for 30 years!!!

The original idea of allowing right turns during red lights came out of the "bad old days" of what was once called the Energy Crisis many decades ago. The reasoning was that millions of gallons of gasoline was being wasted by cars that were stopped at signalized intersections waiting for a green light. This came about a short time after President Nixon mandated a national speed limit of 55 mph on federal highways. Most citizens thought that Drive 55 was a law, when in realty it was the threat of the Federal Government withholding highway repair and maintenance funding from states that failed to comply with the mandate that kept them, and us, in compliance.

It makes no sense to not turn right when it is allowed. So that means we can pick and choose what rules we feel comfortable with? That's pure arrogant and passive aggressive when you know most people are and have been turning until it's your turn. Way to add to the road rage!
