Illinois Takes Step Toward Gay Marriage

Legislators in support of same-sex marriage have a long way to go, but the ball is rolling.

A same-sex marriage bill may be voted on in the Illinois Senate as early as Valentine’s Day, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Sen. Heather Seans, D-Chicago, sponsored the bill in last month’s lame duck session, but it took until Tuesday for it to advance past committee action in a 9-5 vote, according to the report.

The bill will now go to floor process where the entire Senate will consider its passage. Should it make it through the Senate readings, it will go before the House, where the process will be repeated. If it passes the House—a big "if," according to the Tribune—it then goes up for consideration by Governor Pat Quinn.

Quinn recently told the Tribune he completely supports same-sex marriage.

For more, read the Chicago Tribune report.

Bob- These are two seperate issues. Since you brought it up though, a HUGE part of the tax and fee problem is paying for pensions, healthcare plans of firefighters, police officers, teachers where their unions have been working with our elected officials at both the state and local levels to get huge benefit packages in return from votes from the unions.

Reading your prior posts, you have been in favor of these huge benefit packages that are bankrupting this State. But wait....GAYS are the problem of why the taxes are going up? I see tons of things I don't like. See two guys kissing is not one of my the things I like to watch either but I don't like watching overweight, ugly people kissing either.

Below you talk about freedom. Freedom does not only apply to you and people like you.

Yes bob! Because Bush was real good with the budget of this country right? People who are party affiliated (rather Democrat or Republican) are the whole issue with this country. You are the ruination of this country. This is not black and white as you would like people to think. Republicans are just as bad about things as Democrats.

Democrats are correct on the issue of gay rights. They are wrong on the issue of the buget and spending. Whats your point?

This is a wonderful step forward. I hope we can move into the twenty-first century together and choose equality and justice. This isn't the dark ages anymore; it's about time everyone had equal rights in all aspects of life. I pray to my loving, kind, fair, and accepting God that this passes in the house. It is time to leave the past of hatred and discrimination behind and enter into a bright future of respect and equality.

I pray to my loving, kind, fair, and accepting God that you will see the error in your thinking that one must accept homosexual behavior to get to equality and justice. God asks us to turn away from sin, repent and accept Jesus Christ as our Savior. At least that is what my Bible says. It also does not say to hate anyone, however; to accept sin as normal,in the name of equality and justice, I don't see the parallel.

My Bible also says that you can't shave, curse, eat lobster, get a tattoo, mix two different kinds of clothing fibers, or associate with women who are on their periods. No one is ever up in arms about those things, they only focus on the gay argument. Don't you think that being tolerant and accepting of others is the main thing that God wants us to focus on? That's His message. He doesn't want us to be wrapped up in such hatred and injustice.

The state is beyond broke.
Our past governors are in jail or just recently released.
Congressmen being investigated by the federal government.
Streets and bridges in severe disrepair.
Crime is running rampant and the murder rate in Chicago is off the charts.
People are losing their jobs and businesses are closing or just moving out of this state.
What are our leaders doing? What steps are they taking to solve any of these problems?
None, they are busy with the important issue of who can marry who.
It is estimated that only about 3.5% of the population is gay, while about 100% of the population (including the gay community) is affected by all the other problems we are facing, so by all means, lets take care of the gay marriage issue before we even start to try to fix all the other problems affecting our state.

Why do we have to go through this all the time. Ladies and gentleman, I give you simple, reasonable facts.
1) Many religious groups will not be happy with this, however this is a secular government. Yes, the founding fathers were mostly Christian, but they were the same ones who made it clear this government can not suppress nor promote their religion or anybody else's. This practice has actually been fairly well done (though as with everything in life - there's room for improvement). It may not suit your personal belief, but the point of our nation shouldn't be to bend to your whim.
2) Equality is equality is equality. It does not matter how many people in this country are homosexual, just like it did not matter the percentage of our population that were black slaves, women before their suffrage, or Japanese American citizens detained during WW2. Lets stop hemming and hawwing and proceed forward with a promise that was made in the 1770's!
3) Yes, there are a LOT of problems in my city, my county, my state, my timezone, my country, my continent, my hemisphere, my planet, my solar system, my galaxy, and my universe. The best thing about the complexity of the human mind is that we don't have to take it one problem at a time. Think of how horrible this world would be if we had to decide on working to eliminate budget deficits, solve crimes or fight cancer, but not all three at once! Scary!

gays have civil unions. they can make arrangements to have all the benefits that married couples have. they only want to have the term marriage officially used so that can be a slap in the face to marriage and traditional logic. this is a stated fact. it is a deliberate campaign to make a mockery of the term marriage and piss off heterosexuals .

Civil unions do NOT come with the same benefits as marriage. One still cannot make decisions for one's partner if they are in the hospital. If one is in the military, and one's partner dies, one may not be given permission to come home to make funeral arrangements. Partners in civil unions cannot jointly adopt a child. Also, the "traditional" definition of marriage is an older man who barters with the father of a young woman of about fourteen or fifteen for marriage. The woman had no right to the man's property, and in effect was his property. Pre-1960s, the "traditional" definition of marriage did not include an African-American marrying a Caucasian. Earlier than that, "traditionally", a Jewish person could not marry a Christian. Is this the case now? Absolutely not. The definition of marriage is not static. It can change, it HAS changed, and one day it WILL change again, this time to include same-sex marriage. And for the record, I'M straight, and I am not pissed off by the prospect of same-sex marriage. Don't you dare put me in your category of anal-retentive, self-righteous, bigots.

Two people love eachother, want to spend the rest of their life together (legally), want to have equal rights, want to make decisions for their loved one in sickness or death....where lies the problem? Does it affect your decisions? Your marriage? Your non-hedonistic bedroom? No....unless of course your threatened by it....by freedom.

I'm guessing that you are exaggerating that statement quite a bit. Calling people names and acting like children is not a way to get your point across. One person said that people who don't agree with same sex marriage are "sick". Are you serious? Calling "normal" people sick? You need a therapist! Now! The rest of you can rest assured I don't care who you marry or sleep with, as long as you do it behind closed doors. I, like most normal people don't want to see you swapping spit with your significant other in public, I'm straight and I don't do it, neither should you. Save it for your own private place. You don't need everyone elses support to be gay, and you will have less problems with people who oppose it if you stop trying to push your way of life onto everyone else, and stop trying to berate everyone who disagrees with your way of life. All you others who feel like you are on the right side even though you don't think you are gay, GUESS AGAIN!!!

I can say that prior to european colonization homosexual behavior happened on ever continent and was documented in the culture of these groups. I guess because I know gay people and have read about Alexander the Great and his partner Hephaestion.

I do want to add though that being Christian and believing in a all powerful spacedaddy is not "normal". It is YOU who are trying to push your beliefs on everyone else. Are you being asked to marry someone of the same sex? These people are asking for equal treatment from the government...and they are correct. Is your outrage because you have not learned that santa and jesus are actually the same thing and still follow a very flawed ancient book?

phxdr,
What is normal? Normal is defined as the usual, average, or typical state or condition.
So does that make homosexual behavior "normal"? I would have to say no.
Since it is estimated that only about 3.5% of people are gay, that means that almost 97% are not gay. That would make homosexuality "abnormal" or not the usual or average behavior.
Sorry if this is not what you believe, but just because you don't have the room to list all the animals in nature who have homosexuality in their species, the majority of the animals in nature don't have homosexuality in their behavior, thus making homosexuality an abnormal behavior.

How's that for nonsense! i doubt if he's whining on a Patch about the injustice of it all, you seem well informed for a submariner who was under the pack too long! ha
