Meijer to Build in Mokena in 2013

The supermarket determined last week that it will begin construction on a store in Mokena later this year.

Meijer is coming to Mokena.

The supermarket chain, which has owned a lot on the southwest corner of Lincoln Highway and Wolf Road for years, will begin building a store in 2013, with plans to open in 2014, said Alan Zordan, who is the director of economic and community development for the village.

Meijer committed to building an approximately 200,000-square-foot store last week, after months of discussion with village officials.

Check back with Patch for more details on the Meijer development.

Hope the plans are to build a full-size version like they have all over in Michigan and not the little grocery-only version they have in Orland. Orland one was a huge disappointment when it wasn't the full-size store.

There are TWO big Meijers in Bolingbrook and ONE in Plainfield. Also one in Naperville. Probably others, but those are the ones I am familiar with.

Haven't we gone down this road once before? Were they waiting for Werner to announce he would not run again? I'd rather have a Menards. This area seems to be getting a little saturated with grocery stores; I'll believe it when I see it.

I agree... if it's like Orland it's a waste, but if it's like the Indiana store (kind of like a walmart) then it's worth it! hmm... Menards would have been nice!

This project is Werner's final gift to Mokena. Thank you Joe and a great retirement from public life and "stay healthy, my friend".

I like Werner, but Mazzorana, Metanias, and Siwinski also had alot to do with this.

What’s with you yuppies? Are your lives so empty, so hollow, you get excited about another unneeded congestion generating shopping center that sells made in China “stuff”? Is this what it takes to make you happy? Is this what has become of your lives? Where does it end? What’s wrong with you people? I bet you people couldn't name the three branches of government or even name your elected representatives or find Afghanistan on a map. And yet you could probably name all the shopping centers 100 miles around. Disgusting it is, disgusting.

OMG! I guess you can't please everyone. Do you never shop? You must at least buy necessities, so where do you buy them? I spread my business around Mokena unless I absolutely can't get it here.

How many frickin’ stores do you need? Ms. Bowl you’re a mindless zombie and don’t even know it. Obviously a yuppie who just can’t figure out what life is about and someone who is perfectly comfortable with the title of “consumer”. Personally I find that tag insulting, kind of like Mayor Werner referring to us citizens as customers. A word of advice: the material world will not make you happy.

The cops need to bust your cover, because you are a danger walking the streets.

It's a ploy to throw us off the mayoral fiasco. I too would rather have a Menards.

Good Morning. I asked Mayor Baldermann this very question last night. He said the opening of a Menards store awaits an uptick in major construction.

Who dat

Meijer has pledged to build in so many suburbs over the past 10-15 years and has come up empty nearly every time.

Lisle, Homer and New Lenox all come to mind without thinking hard about it.

This Meijer has been promised for a long time as well only to fall through--we'll see what happens this time around.

The Menards very well may have fallen through and may not build at all per my discussion with the manager of the menards in homer, however, baldermann says its a go. Again, we'll see...

Baldermann said Menards would be built but not until the housing market turns around.

Does the outgoing Mayor receive any kind of "finder's fee" or 'facilitation compensation' from these businesses ? Not much info about why he pulled a 180 on this decision.

Fair question- after all, it's Illinois politics we're talking here. The land of the" fat envelope".

Its 10 to 1 (occupied vs vacant) in Mokena and what is occupied either doesnt last long or doesnt serve the public in a way that will make your property value or quality of life increase. It's like a broken record, JC Penny?! Meijer (dutch for "more" because it costs more than you think) maybe ANOTHER bank? another supermarket? another CVS? another car wash?
Alan Zordan doesnt even live in Mokena, he has nothing to lose because he makes over 100K a year (his salary isnt even the highest paid out in Mokena), he lives where they bring in corporations/chains that actually increase your property value and quality of life. New Lennox. Thats called irony.
You know what else they do in New Lennox and just about every other suburb?
They elect their own mayor.

I wouldn't want to live in New Lenox. If you think New Lenox is so great, sell your house and move there. Mokena home values have held up the best in all of Will County, so you won't take a beating on the sale of your house. New Lenox needs you! Go vote for Balderman, jack of all trades, master of none.

Mokena Resident

9:41 am on Friday, February 22, 2013

As a Mokena resident your taxes go to pay these people, people who dont live in Mokena but still decide whats best for Mokena.
People who blatantly run Mokena into the ground with novice, power drunk decision making skills and massive vacant lots and get paid over $100,000 for doing it.

Mokena resident: You have no idea what you are talking about. Mokena is only blatantly run into the ground in your eyes and I don't know any village employees that are power drunk. Keep thinking the challengers are good, because they are not good! Incumbents all the way!
