Students and staff at Mokena Elementary School took a stand against bullying by holding hands to form a unity circle on Wednesday morning in front of the school.

“The circle shows unity,” said Anna Kirchner, principal of Mokena Elementary. “That was really the primary purpose behind it.”

The unity circle is part of the Rachel’s Challenge program. Named after Rachel Scott, the first student killed in the Columbine shootings, Rachel’s Challenge teaches kindness and compassion.

Students at Mokena Elementary are participating in several anti-bullying activities during October, which is National Bullying Prevention Month. Recently, students signed a Rachel’s Challenge banner and received a presentation about Rachel’s Challenge.

The Rachel’s Challenge program is also being implemented at Mokena Intermediate School and Mokena Junior High School
