• UPDATED (11:36 a.m. Friday, June 15): The LifeStar Chicago medical helicopter will not be at the event because President Barak Obama will be in the area over the weekend, and the chopper is grounded except for medical emergencies, said Julie Roseberry, a spokeswoman for Sen. Christine Radogno's office.

Last year marked the inaugural Children's Safety Expo in the Lincoln-Way area, a community event sponsored by State Sen. Christine Radogno (R-Lemont) that brought public service providers from the region to talk and give demonstrations about health and safety issues. And although it was primarily an educational event, it also gave Radogno a chance to meet the people of the district she represents.

"Like any senator, she wants to get involved with the communities she represents," said Amy Barry, a spokeswoman for Radogno's office.

That's why the senator, along with Frankfort Mayor Jim Holland, New Lenox Mayor Tim Baldermann and Mokena Mayor Joe Werner, are making a return engagement for this year's expo, which is from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 16, at Lincoln-Way East High School.

It could also be the last time Radogno attends or sponsors the event. After the November election, the 41st District that Radogno represents will no longer include Frankfort, Mokena and New Lenox because of the state's redrawn political boundaries. But until that time, the senator's attention will be with the constituents who she was elected to represent, Barry said.

"I can't speak to what's going to happen next year," Barry said. "I know we try to do these events in as many districts as we can. ... She's serving right now in the 41st District, and that's the people she's catering to. She's trying to assist and help the people in the 41st District."

Part of that assistance includes lining up sessions at this weekend's expo that educate parents on how save money for their children's college education, how to protect kids from bullying and how to keep them safe on the Internet, Barry said.

And while parents are receiving safety and health tips, the kids are being wowed by being able to get behind the wheel of almost 30 public service vehicles that are part of the Touch-a-Trucks display. Like last year, a LifeStar Chicago medical helicopter will be landing on the L-W East campus and be available for kids—and adults—to check out from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Admission to the event is free, and complimentary refreshments will be served. There also will be a giveaways.
