2008-09 Instructional Expenditure per Pupil
Information taken from each district's 2010 Illinois District Report Card. This number includes the direct costs of teaching pupils or the interaction between teachers and pupils. This is not the operating expenditure per pupil, which includes the gross operating cost of a school district excluding summer school, adult education, bond principal retired and capital expenditures. This week's StatShot shows how much each of the five elementary districts that send their students to Lincoln-Way 210 spent per student on teaching during the 2008-09 school year.

Bear in mind, this is just the money spent on "the direct costs of teaching pupils or the interactions between teachers and pupils." The full per-pupil cost of running a school district is a different number, one that is not shown here.

This information is from each district's 2010 Illinois District Report Card, the most recent report available for all five districts:

Mokena 159
$3,841
Summit Hill 161
$4,598
Frankfort 157-C
$5,127
New Lenox 122
$4,338
Manhattan 114
$4,650
State Average $6,483

As the 2011 Illinois District Report Cards start trickling in, these number are changing.

In a draft version of Mokena 159's 2011 report card, for example, the instructional expenditure shot up more than $600 per student between the 2008-09 and 2009-10 school years.

We'll publish the more recent numbers when all the 2011 report cards are in and compare these numbers to the new ones.

One clarification. The state average includes ALL districts in Illinois, be they elementary school, high school or K-12. So the number is a little skewy considering high schools have different costs than K-8.

But unless the state changes that (and I doubt they will), it's the only comparison we have.

Most of the instructional expense relates to teachers salaries and benefits. Mokena's lower cost during this period was mostly related to the district's practice of higher class sizes in the Junior High School, which were about 20% larger than the other district's. This was partially offset by all day kindergarten, which added four or five additional kindergarten teachers.
