Lauren Peterson didn't just raise money for cancer research by shaving her head.

With $2,190 as of Sunday night, Lauren raised the most money of any single participant at Friday's St. Baldrick's Day event in New Lenox.

Peterson, 9, a Mokena Intermediate School fourth-grader, decided to have her locks chopped off for St. Baldrick's Day, a yearly charity for childrens cancer research. And that she did on Friday night at Gatto's in New Lenox.

Read about Peterson's plans to go bald for cancer research.

Shaving on behalf of Mackenzie W., an 11-year-old girl from O'Fallon, Mo., Peterson raised more money than any single participant at Friday's event. She was cheered on by friends, family and by Mackenzie's cousin Maiya Woelbling, 10, of St. Louis.

"It feels so weird," the newly bald Peterson said.

Will Lauren be doing this again next St. Baldrick's Day?

"Probably," she said, laughing. "I don't know if my mom will let me."
