Mokena Mayor Withdraws from Race
Mokena Mayor Joe Werner will not run again, and Frank Fleischer will be the only candidate for mayor whose name will appear on the ballot in April.
Mokena Mayor Joe Werner announced Tuesday that he will withdraw his candidacy from the village mayoral race, Sun-Times Media reports.
Werner cited a need to focus on his family, his plumbing business and his full-time position as water department superintendent and plumbing inspector for the city of Blue Island, according to the report.
Werner called the move "the toughest decision I’ve ever had to make," but also "logical and practical for my family."
Werner's challenger, Frank Fleischer, will be the only mayoral candidate on the ballot in April's election.
Patch will update the story as more information becomes available.

This hits me as hard as Obama winning the presidency. Here comes the council wars again. Add Mokena to another town in Illinois that will become dysfunctional. Tell your family and friends to write in Werner's name In April. WHAT A SHAME.

Either there is more to this or he seen the writing on the wall. If only a couple of the other incumbents would disappear ! Time for a change!!

Fleischer's a good man but not capable of this job. The last time he ran there seemed to be an agenda to get rid of John Downs. That would be a disaster losing both Downs and Werner. The other problem is that Tino could possibly get on the Board. (You think Rnonda and Laura were a joke, just wait if Tino gets in). NOW THAT WOULD BE A DISASTER! Remember to tell your family and friends to write in Werner's name in April.

Why should someone throw away their vote on a write in for a man that does not want the job? If he was so concerned about the Village and his passion so strong,he should have done the right thing and withdrew long before the process! That would have made everyone aware and allowed other interested parties to join the ballot. His actions basically just gave the office to someone unchallenged! Thats what people should be upset about!

You're right about the write in. Just read that one has to declare by Feb 7 that he is a write in candidate. So don't write in Werner, but somebody out there with an agenda that is simply for Mokena should step forward. I would do it, but my business, mostly monkey, does not allow it.

Joe you will be sorely missed! You During your time serving Mokena as it's Mayor you did a great job and lead a great team. I can't remember a time when the board functioned so peacefully and effectively to actually get things done and bring progress to the Village. Even though we no longer live in Mokena, I still work here and as a person who works in conjunction with the Village on a regular basis I can only hope that things don't return to the dysfunction of yesteryear! Good luck Joe in all you pursue - you and your family deserve the very best!

The problem with politics and people running for elections is that no one is really qualified to turn around a Village, Town, City, or Country like ours. We see it at all levels from the U.S. Presidency on down. Years ago there were qualified people who really did a good job as an elected official, but sorry to say those days are gone.
Seems like in Mokena every trustee has had their own agenda over the years I've been in town which has been since 1990. Lots of bickering, and people not looking out for the masses of which you serve, but rather your own street or neighborhood in which you reside. We are the only town over 10,000 people in the south suburbs without a McDonald's restaurant which provide much needed tax revenue for the communities in which they locate to. Congrats to New Lenox, your new Portillo's is great...........yummmmm and oh those needed tax dollars. Good luck newly elected trustees and Mr Fleisher if you are our mayor after the election. All Mokena eyes will be on all of you.

It will be interesting to see how Frank will handle the pressure, because he didn't handle it to well when he was a Trustee. Anyone that didn't agree with him he had no problem foaming at the mouth and his trade mark move pointing his finger at you. You Frank lovers out to pull some old Channel 6 tapes see the true Frank . It wouldn't take much to push his buttons before the Frank of past comes out. We'll all be looking to see who we can write in.
