El Cortez, Mokena (5 of 5 stars)
The good: Everything from this family-owned restaurant was wonderful. I had the pork tacos on soft corn tortillas and they were delicious. I didn't need any sauce, salsa or other toppings; it was perfect as is.
The bad: The lunch special was two beef or chicken tacos plus beans and rice for $7.50. The dinner was three beef, chicken or pork tacos plus beans and rice for $8. Either's a good deal, but do what I did and splurge with that extra 50 cents.

El Burrito Loco, New Lenox (4 of 5 stars)
The good: At $2 per taco, I got a of bang for my buck. These heavy-duty, double-stacked tortillas (corn or flour) are packed with meat. And there's a great variety to choose from here. I got one each of steak, pork and chicken, but there's also chorizo and more.
The bad: Honestly, I didn't find the meat that flavorful. It was tender and there was lots of it, but it never jumped off my plate. The hot salsa on the side helped spice it up.

Buenas Nachos, Frankfort (4 of 5 stars)
The good: Since tacos only cost $1.60 (what a deal!), I ordered two: a beef taco in a flour tortilla and a steak taco in a corn tortilla. The steak taco was my favorite, meaty, tangy and satisfying. I'm generally not a big fan of corn tortillas, but I liked this one.
The bad: The beef taco was pretty lackluster. I was hoping for a little more flavor. Overall, the beef was plain and a salty for my tastes.

@Clint Paraday:
I'll have to try the breaded steak taco next time.
The other place I need to check out is Lucky Burrito in the Frankfort Crossing shopping center. Has anyone been there lately? What do you think?

The steak Buenas Nachos tacos with fresh avocado are the best! El Burrito Loco puts too much salt on their steak and every once in awhile you hit a rogue unidentifiable crunchy thing. Haven't had tacos from El Cortez in years (usually get fajitas there)...will have to give them a try again after the rave review!

Enjoy reading all your reviews. Suggestion for you all to try, this cold weather needs some warm comfort food, macaroni & cheese is a true comfort food. I have been trying to find a good Macaroni & Cheese (baked or not) I tried Enrico's didn't care for it. Dominick's in Frankfort has mac & cheese soup in the self serve pots by the door, it is good, if lucky enough to find a day they have it. Other restaurants that had a good one sadly are no longer around. Would love to see if you guys would be able to find a good one. Keep up the good work, guys!

Thanks, Dee! We did mac & cheese way back in April, but there's always foods we can revisit. Here's what we ran in April: http://newlenox.patch.com/articles/which-area-restaurant-is-your-mac-and-cheese-daddy

@Clint Paraday, I totally agree with you about Tacos Enrique on Halstead. The same family also own Taco Joe's on 111th and Pulaski, which is not as good but close.

We enjoy eating at El Cortez, the steak tacos are fresh, meat is lean, and the price is definitely fair. For carry out tacos ( they have a few tables to eat at) we have been visiting Lucky Burrito located in Frankfort at Route 30 & Lagrange by Brown's Chicken. Tacos and Burritos are full of flavor, never had a bad meal from this place. You can watch your food being made and the staff is extremely nice. I tell everyone to try it- and the only complaint I ever heard was that they put alot of sour cream on their steak burritos.

While I agree that Buenos Nachos as well as El Burrito Loco have excellent nachos as well as tacos, etc. has anyone ever tried the Nachos at Tribes Ale House? Although it is not technically in NL, the large nachos are served on a large pizza pan and they are very good!
