Why do we need to spend $1 million for kids to run on their own during the school year, or to take a class movement break? I'm pretty sure programs like this are just a collossal waste of money. We spend money to madate PE EVERY DAY. Enough is enough. We are broke, as a nation, and we squander $1 million on this...crazy.

Every day we read about another school cutting back on sports and PE activities and then Michelle has to spend millions of our dollars traveling around the country trying to convince everybody that we need to spend money from another top heavy government agency to get kids to exercise more. Does anybody remember intra mural activities that were part of every school until govenment decided to cut corners and save money?

I see nothing wrong with doing whatever is necessary to keep our youngsters fit and active. Their parents sure don't seem to be too worried with such matters, allowing them to twit and twat with their pin-balling devices and electrical type-writers, looking the other way as their children's brains rot to the glow of How-dee Doo-dee and Lieutenant Kanga-Roo.

Something must be done! Why, when I was still an educator, our sorely missed Mr. Kennedy commissioned (with taxpayer money, mind you) the flautist and playwright Meredith Willson to compose this exer-cising march, with the help of Bob Preston and his sonorous voice. It was sent out to every school in the unfit nation, and soon our children were Aphrodites and Adonises once again!

The frustrating part is the only answer seems to be throw more money at it. Since nobody has any, that's just smoke. I agree that throwing money at this isn't the best solution, but understand that $1 million dollars is nothing compared to the entire federal budget. I'm sure we can find the money by launching 1 less drone attack a month.

The solution should be mandating that schools have PE once a day. When I grew up, we had PE ever day of the week and we had no problem with obesity. Unfortunately, many parents aren't involved in getting their kids active so we need to make it apart of school. If we can reduce obesity in kids, imagine what that will have in medical costs savings. I'm thinking more then $1 million.

When Palos 118 was making it's ill conceived school expansion program about a decade ago, the board members all wanted to spend about $3 million on a second big box gym at South for sports like basketball where the kids would only be able to particpate about half the period. I suggested that instead, at much lower cost, we build an aerobic activity room where kids could get activity to music for at least 20 minutes a day for ALL the students, and a health fitness equipment center so that the kids all could get a second means of aerobic exercise for 20 minutes per day. This would have cost less than half their "big gym" plan. They rejected the most effective aerobic room idea, and built the big gym AND the equipment room.

Hmmmm... I wonder whose relative got to sell them the equipment and maintenance contract?LOL

The simple fact is that we already have the resources in public education to keep our kids fit. It takes inspiration and determination on the part of the staff instead heavy funding. Too often phys ed and grant funding primarily benefits staff and their pocketbooks instead of the kids. Perhaps that's the BIGGEST obstacle to our kids health out there!

Since facts seem to be in short supply here, I'll just point out that this grant money is being provided by the private sector. Specifically CIGNA and Kaiser Permanente (http://www.activeschoolsasap.org//node/197). Also keep in mind that not all schools have a PE requirement. I am happy that Illinois does. Having a "cause" has been a tradition of First Ladies dating back to Louisa Adams. Laura Bush worked on and funded literacy programs throughout the country despite the fact that we already taught reading in our schools. I thought we wanted our kids to get smarter. P.E. began to be mandated in schools in the 1960's and obesity has done nothing but increase. At the same time the federal government took over public education and our populace became dumber. Recess at the elementary level allows for plenty of exercise and P.E. is recess on steroids($$$). Put those ($$$) into math and science lab time instead and watch dumb disappear.
