Biking the Trails in the L-W Area Safely

Bicycle riding is a popular and healthy activity in the Lincoln-Way communities. Should children 16 and under be required to wear helmets?

The Lincoln-Way communities are fortunate to be within near proximity to nationally-recognized bicycle trails, including the Hickory Creek Preserve and the Old Plank Road Trail.

As long as it's not raining, the summer months are a great time to get out with the kids and ride a bicycle. So get your picnic baskets ready and a supply of water. While you're out, keep in mind a few safety tips.

Recreational bicycling also comes with the potential for bicycle accidents. The Center for Disease Control reports an average of 500,000 bicycle-related accidents annually and 700 deaths. The Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute says communities in Illinois, including Skokie and Inverness, require helmets to be worn by children 16 and under. Should the Lincoln-Way communities adopt similar regulations?
