Heat: It is what it is

Running in the heat--it's not so bad!

I've been laying low lately, namely because I have no advice about "beating the heat" that you haven't already heard elsewhere. Drink water. Listen to your body. If possible, exercise during cooler times of the day, such as midnight or in the middle of a downpour (or both).

But really, folks, this is summer; it's what we fantasize about during winter runs when our eyelashes sport icicles and breathing gives us brainfreeze. It's here to stay for the next month or two, and we'll miss it when it's gone. So all a person can do is embrace it for what it is.  There are states and even countries where it is this hot or hotter almost all the time (including certain countries that tend to produce world-record holding marathoners).

When we were kids, it was this hot or hotter, and we still played outside.  So the least I can do is head out there, water my flowers (and myself), and then see what's shaking on Old Plank. I'll try hard to remember the sensation of sweat running into my ears and pooling in my collarbones, because there are certainly dark, dreary, bonechilling runs looming in the upcoming fall and winter, on which I'd give anything to be able to complain about the heat again.
