Rain Barrel Distribution June 14 in Elwood

     JOLIET -- In celebration of spring, the Will County Land Use Department is partnering with the Conservation Foundation to sell rain barrels and compost bins.

     The durable environmental additions to a yard will help harvest rain water for garden and landscape needs, saving money and natural resources. Rain barrels are available in a variety of colors and cost $58.50.

     Use the compost bin to start making a valuable and nutrient rich supplement for bushes, trees, flowers, and gardens.  Both stationary and tumbling styles are available, at a cost of $56.50 and $136.50, respectively.

    A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Conservation Foundation.

     Rain barrels are simply large containers that capture rainwater from your roof that can be used for watering gardens, lawns, or washing your car.  The use of rainwater from a rain barrel conserves water that would otherwise be pumped from a public or private well.

     A reduction in the use of water pumps reduces energy use and combined with the conservation of water, helps the County achieve goals cited in its Long-Term Energy Efficiency & Conservation Plan.  

     Rain barrels, compost bins, and accessories are available for purchase through the “Rain barrel and compost bin” link on the www.willcountygreen.com website. All purchases must be made through the website prior to pick up or delivery. 

      Residents may pick up their pre-purchased barrel or bin during the Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collection from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at West End Park, 2643 S. Deer Run Drive in Elwood. Home delivery is available for an extra $6 fee and rain barrel installation for $25. Other accessories are also available.
