Tutorial given to help disabled residents use bus service

JOLIET – From how to keep safe and how to plan a trip, a group of Will County residents with disabilities and students from Bridgeport Academy in Orland Park learned they don’t have to call the ADA Paratransit bus to travel.

Will County Executive Larry Walsh, Pace, and the Regional Transportation Authority, recently sponsored a short course in riding the bus at the Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living, 2415-A W. Jefferson St.

“The event was the culmination of talks between all of the agencies,” said Wendie Garlich, Will County Mobility Manager. “We wanted to give residents with disabilities an opportunity to learn about using fixed route buses instead of always having to call ADA Paratransit service.

“The next step in the process was learning how to go online and plan a trip. This event helped build their confidence so they’ll feel comfortable using these services on their own.”

Participants each attended two sessions, one on trip planning using www.RTACHICAGO.com.

The other was becoming familiar with a Pace bus, including a practice run on boarding with a pass and rider safety.

Bryce D. Ward, Special Projects Manager Marketing & Communications External Relations for Pace, told them that 140,000 passengers ride the 200 fixed bus routes each week day. All of the buses are wheelchair accessible.

Betty Wright of Joliet smiled as driver Roberta Fews, hooked her wheelchair into place. “I ride the bus all the time.”
