Severe Cold Expected After Snow Tapers Off

Snow fall is winding down early Thursday evening, after about 8 inches fell throughout the area.

The National Weather Service is still holding a lake effect snow warning for Will County until 6 p.m. Temperatures are expected to drop Thursday night into Friday morning between -5 and -10 degrees below zero. Winds at 15 to 25 mph are predicted to create a severe wind chill down to -15 to -25 degrees below zero, as well as sending snow drifts on to roads and other areas.

People are encouraged to wear a hat and gloves, and keep as much skin covered as possible when going outside. Commuters who will be waiting for trains are especially warned to take precautions for the weather.

Since much more than 2 inches of snow has fallen, Mokena residents should be aware that snow parking rules are in effect. Cars must be kept off the streets until well after snow has been cleared, or face fines as high as $750, according to the village.

Anyone with questions about the village snow removal plan should call 708-479-3900 during regular business hours.
