StatShot: How Do L-Way Towns Stack Up, Census-Wise?

From growth and commutes to college educations and home values, a quick comparison of some of the ways Mokena, New Lenox and Frankfort rank, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Growth (2000-2010)

Frankfort was the big winner in growth, shooting up by 71.1 percent between the last two censuses. New Lenox increased by 37.3 percent and Mokena by 28.5 percent.

Education

Another first place for Frankfort, where 53.1 percent of the people 25 or older had bachelor's degrees or higher between 2005 and 2009. Next came Mokena at 34.8 and New Lenox at 32.9 percent.

The state average is 29.8 percent, so this is an above-average area in terms of education.

For percentage of high school graduates 25 and older, it's New Lenox (97.1 percent), then Frankfort (96.9 percent) and Mokena (95.8 percent).

Income

Frankfort for three, with a median household income of $116,433 from 2005 to 2009. That more than doubles the state average of $55,222.

Mokena comes next at $97,173 and New Lenox follows at $88,075.

Commute Time

New Lenox residents spend the least time in their cars every day, with a mean travel time to work of 34.2 minutes. Then comes Frankfort at 35.6 minutes and Mokena at 36.3 minutes.

Home Value

Frankfort again, with a median value of owner-occupied housing units, 2005-2009, of $405,000. As with income, that more than doubles the state average ($405,000).

Next is Mokena at $342,100 and New Lenox at $297,600.

Sales (2007)

First place again goes to Frankfort, which did $558,318,000 in retail sales in 2007, the most recent year for which numbers are available.

Then comes New Lenox at $278,302,000 and finally Mokena at $179,522,000.

In terms of merchant wholesaler sales, it's Mokena that blows the others out of the water.

Mokena did $393,384,000 in merchant wholesaler sales that year, compared to $93,963,000 for New Lenox and a comparatively meager $57,323,000 for Frankfort.
