The Mokena Applebee's restaurant is one of at least eight in the Chicago area that could be closing its doors for good thanks to bankruptcy reorganization of its franchisee in Kentucky, the Chicago Tribune reports.

AppleIllinois, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy April 22 in Kentucky, is selling its franchise rights and restaurants as part of its reorganization, the report stated. The company owns 33 restaurants in the Chicago area and hopes to sell the rights for most of them to other franchisees, the report continued.

Of the eight locations to be closed, two others—Tinley Park and Homewood—are in the south suburbs along with Mokena, the report stated. Because of the possibility of mass layoffs, state law requires AppleIllinois to inform all 33 of its restaurants, which it has, the report continued.
