Mokena’s Only Golf Course: Old Growth Trees, New Media Presence

Although the Willow Run Golf Course displays ancient, majestic trees along their nine-hole courses, their revamped website boasts brand-new content.

On a hot, sunny summer afternoon, what sounds better than hitting a few golf balls in the midst of mature Mokena trees? That’s exactly what in Mokena offers.

Not only is Willow Run Mokena’s only golf course, but it’s also the only mature, old-fashioned nine-hole course in the area, General Manager Rich Wisslead said. He said that the course has made a name for itself because of the majestic trees that line the courses.

Golfer Ron Murawski said he goes to Willow Run about 10 times during the season, sometimes more, because it’s close to home and reasonably priced.

“It is a hidden gem,” Murawski said.

Murawski said he enjoys the relaxing atmosphere that allows you to play at your own pace, and that there are always friendly people around.

“There’s none of the pressures of a larger course, it’s just relaxing,” Murawski said.

Back in the 1960s, a farming couple bought the property and first opened the golf course, Wisslead said. Later, the Skvorcs, who owned courses in Walnut Hills and Hickory Hills, bought the golf course. It has stayed in the family ever since.

Willow Run has been opened and bringing in business in Mokena for nearly 50 years, Wisslead said. People mostly come from Mokena and the surrounding areas, such as Frankfort, New Lenox, Homer Glen and Lockport, but Wisslead stated that they also get people from Orland Park and Tinley Park too.

“People like to stay local these days because of the price of gas,” Wisslead said.

Still, he said that Willow Run brings in around 100 golfers on a typical weekday. Mondays and Tuesdays see less, weekends see more, but 100 is average.

“It’s very friendly for all skill levels,” Wisslead said. “Good players have a good time playing here, and new players enjoy it too.”

Wisslead also said the friendly staff makes everyone feel at home. Staff members come into play in the lounge/bar, the snack shop and the pro shop. Willow Run also includes a putting green and an outdoor patio area. Golf carts are available to rent.

Willow Run hosts numerous golf leagues, but since they fill up in the spring, interested golfers will need to wait until next year to join.

Until then, golfers should check out the Willow Run website, which will be entirely revamped as of tomorrow. The site provides information on all the current specials being offered during the summertime.

Wisslead said the best deal right now is the buy nine holes, get nine free. This is good Monday through Friday, as long as golfers begin their second nine holes before 1 p.m.

For golfers who prefer to play when temperatures begin their descent, they could pay for unlimited play Monday through Saturday. After 2:30 p.m. it’s $17 per player or $24.75 with cart rental. After 5:30 p.m. it’s $12.50 per player or $18.75 with cart

Senior rates for those 59 and up are also available as well as junior rates for those 17 and under. Group packages are available for 16 people or more.
