Paczki Day in Mokena: Videos From Fleckenstein's and Polonia

Here's what the scene was like Fat Tuesday in Mokena's two paczki paradises.

Kathy Shea of Mokena said there's only one place she goes for the sweet, once-a-year pastry known as the paczki—Fleckenstein's Bakery.

"Because they're the best and they've been here forever," she said.

Shea and her husband both bring paczki into their respective offices on Fat Tuesday, the day before Lent starts and one of the few days a year paczki (pronounced "poonch-key" are available).

For Kim Jiracek of Mokena, Fleckenstein's paczki is a way of promoting local business.

"It's close and they're a good bakery and I like to support the town," she said as she walked out of the bakery with paczki and a traditional Mardi Gras king cake.

Down on 191st Street, Polonia Catering and Market was also selling the treats, although as a catering place rather than a bakery, they were dealing more with pre-orders than walk-ins.

"We have a lot of people who order ahead of time, so it's pretty quick. No long lines," owner Brian Machay said
