Fast Facts: For the second straight season, the crosstown rivals were pitted against each other for the conference title, and both seasons, East came away victorious by handing North its only conference loss both times. This time around, however, more is at stake. A berth in the state quarterfinals at Hoffman Estates next weekend is on the line as the top two teams in the state collide Tuesday for the sectional title. For the second straight season, East has tied a program record with its 35 wins thus far. The Griffins, an 18-25, 25-22, 25-21 winner over Brother Rice in the semifinals, are a three-time state qualifier. The Griffins have only one senior, and start all juniors. Junior setter Austin Royer leads the way. He is already the program’s all-time assist leader and was the first freshman to start at setter in program history. Van Dellen and Vorderer are the team’s two leaders in kills. Both were on varsity as sophomores. Star libero Josh Phalen is out with a broken hand. All four of those players start on the Ultimate 17 Gold club team. North – which beat Sandburg 31-29, 25-19 Friday – is coming off its first-ever regional title last year and has set a new record with its 35 wins in its fifth varsity season. McFarland leads the way on the outside with help from Walenga. The winner of this match draws the winner of the O’Fallon Sectional between Minooka and O’Fallon in the state quarterfinals next Friday at 1 p.m. at Hoffman Estates.
