Halloween 2013 Trick or Treat Hours for Mokena

It's almost time to don costumes and go in search of candy.

This year’s official trick or treating hours for Thursday are between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. in Mokena.

Here are some general safety tips for a smooth night of sugar rushes:

• Young children should be accompanied by an adult at all times
• If not accompanied by an adult, make sure they are trick or treating with friends, and set a curfew as well as a route
• Bring a flashlight to light the paths, and to stay visible. Glow sticks work as well, just don’t break them open
• Costumes with long, flowing layers could be a hazard near lit jack-o-lanterns, and make sure costumes don't impair vision or movement
• Stay in familiar, well-lit areas, and avoid short cuts or other paths that aren’t easily seen
• Don’t enter a house when trick or treating, and don’t ask children to come inside to receive treats
• Homes welcoming trick or treaters should leave on a porch or exterior light
• Look both ways before crossing the street, and always “stop, look and listen”
• Call 911 immediately if a child appears lost or in trouble
• Make sure children don’t eat unfamiliar treats, especially if they have allergies. Report any suspicious treats to police
