I Love Mokena! How to Showcase Your Hometown

Trustee Don Labriola brainstorms ways to highlight the community of Mokena.

Welcome back.

Love and inspiration.

Many good things can happen when those two words are used as the focal point of an idea or quest.

Those are the exact two words that came to mind this past Saturday as I watched the Men's Olympic Cyclists Road Race through the streets of London.  I marveled at the overhead view being transmitted from helicopters and also cameras mounted on various structures that showcased the city.

Hundreds of thousands of spectators lined up along the race route, cheering for the athletes, no matter which country they hailed from.

It all got me wondering what other types of great events we could host right here in our beautiful little village. We are very blessed with many traditions here, and the more recent ones have continued to showcase the magnificence of Mokena.

Now it's your turn. I would like to ask our readers for ideas and suggestions about new events that would promote Mokena and continue to demonstrate what a great place Mokena is in which to  live, work and visit.

Based on my experience last Saturday I'll get the conversation started. Mokena would be a fantastic venue for a competitive cycling event. Combining our streets, walking trails, park district facilities and forest preserve area we could host one heck of a bicycle race.

Not only would it be enjoyable to those of us who live here, it would bring in spectators from near and far. And those spectators would help give a boost to our local economy at restaurants, retail establishments and gas stations.
I'm quite sure there are many great ideas out there, so don't be shy. As the philosopher said, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."

Tour de Mokena anyone?

So much to love about Mokena.

P.S.   If you go online at NBC's Olympic website you'll find multiple videos detailing the finish of that cycle race in London. It was as exciting as any race you'll see anywhere.
