I Love Mokena: Reader Wants Spicier Market Options

We asked what you would like to see come to Mokena's French Market; one reader wants to see more herb and spice options.

Welcome back.

Several weeks ago we discussed . In addition, .

One of those comments came from Mokena resident Sharon White.

Here is what Sharon had to say:

"I like our French Market and would like to see herbs and spices... that you could buy in any quantity you need. Too often, I buy a bottle, not needing to use all of the spice, then end up throwing it out because the expiration date has passed. I would be willing to pay a little more to be able to buy just what I need. Love the Amish foods, bakery, fruits and vegetables that are usually there. I have never been to Erbert and Gerbert's Sandwich Shops so could not recommend them, but any shop to help downtown Mokena would be great. A shop that would attract commuters, either before they go to work or coming home, would also be good... some place that would offer quick service and take out."

Great comments, thank you Sharon. Your thoughts are very indicative of many other suggestions that we have received. In general, most of the requests dealing with the French Market focus on the desire for greater diversity in the type of merchants that set up shop at on the Saturdays when the market is open.

As promised I've included contact information for another business suggestion sent in from our readers:

Trader Joe's
800 S.  Shamrock Avenue
Monrovia, CA  91016
Attn: Business Development Office

Interesting fact:Brothers Theo and Karl Albrecht are in the grocery business.Theo owns Trader Joe's USA operation and Karl owns Aldi. Although they've gone to great lengths to prove the two are separate entities there is a common belief both are owned by the same company.

If you take the time to contact Trader Joe's please be sure to tell them how much you love Mokena.

I think Mokena needs to think about a few different options first off the French Market is way to small. When you get people shopping with small children there is no room to move around they need to spread it out more so you can shop in comfort. Second the market needs to open it up to have a larger amount of businesses to get involved. Each and every year you seem to have the same old vendors get more creative and less costly maybe you might have a better turn out. Maybe once a month or every other week open it up to locals to sell their wears out of their trunks of there vehicles or under their own tent and maybe charge them 10 or 20 dollars per parking space. Third maybe keep the market on Saturdays and also do something like they do in Highland park each Wednesday evening they open up their market and have an evening of music and wines and taste testing of local eateries. This might bring more people to you downtown area and liven up this town. On that note each week have all the restaurants or only a couple particapate each week simular to the Taste of Chicago but over the entire spring and summer.
