24 Arrested in Underage Drinking Party

A 16-year-old girl was among those cited by Mokena police.

Police made 24 arrests in connection with an underage drinking party in Mokena on June 5.

Mokena police responded to the 19500 block of Glennell Avenue to a report of an underage drinking party. According to the police report, the responding officers saw a large number of cars parked along Glennell Avenue—so many that only one car could get by at a time on the two-way street.

A resident, Kevin R. Mitchell, 20, told police that his parents were out of town and everyone in the residence was under 21, according to the report. Inside, police found a large amount of alcohol on tables and countertops.

In all, police made 24 arrests, including Mitchell and a 16-year-old girl. All were cited and released at the scene and will be notified of their court date via mail. The girl was turned over to the custody of her parents.

This looks more like a Plainfield party being held in Mokena. When parents leave their under 21s home alone, this is what happens. By the way, these drinking parties have been going on in Mokena for at least 50 years.

Leave them home alone? Look at most of the ages, 20. They should be off to college by that point. I also find it funny that in one year, in the eyes of the law, all those 20 year old people will be perfectly capable of drinking.

Hey now! The police misquoted me! I said over half the people were under 21, not everyone! There was at least 10 or 15 people of age here too! Get it right!
DudeMitch June 08, 2011 at 09:15 PM
And yeah Mike, it was a Plainfield party in Mokena.
Dave June 08, 2011 at 09:26 PM
Mike, Most of the people at the party were in college. It's summer. Everyone is home and celebrating.

just so you know, your 'report' was mostly false. a ton of the information you posted was untrue, such as the resident admitting that the whole party consisted of underage people, when only a fraction were, and the fact that you made "arrests". neither occurred, and no arrests were made. a small fine, not even eligible enough to be considered a drinking ticket was issued. next time, look at the report more carefully before submitting the block that 24 ADULTS live on.

This article is absolute garbage. Posting the names ages and addresses of children? Really? Absolutely disgusting. No journalistic integrity whatsoever. Grossly unprofessional.

I've had to delete several comments on here for petty name-calling and insinuations. This would be a good opportunity for many of you to review our "Terms of Use" policy. There's a link on the bottom page. I understand why emotions are high, but please take a minute to breathe before you post, or it will all have been for nothing. Thanks.

Jesse Marx: As a parent and adult I feel you did wrong by posting their names and addresses of these young adults, where is their families' rights and privacy? I guess journalists go above and beyond to get a little article like this posted and published. Yes, there was a under age drinking party going on which I do not encourage or discourage but a lot of them are old enough to live and be on their own. And please do not tell me you did not do this in your college years! They were responsible enough to be at someone's house and at least not be drinking and driving like lots of them do. Next time look for news that are more important to the community and beneficial to young adults perhaps, like what is out there for them to do in the summer instead of drinking?! One more thing let people express what they think and feel just like journalists fought for their liberty of expression we have the same rights!

Mayra, No one at Patch is denying your right of expression. We only ask that comments are non-threatening (for purposes of libel) and profanity-free. Now: I was not responsible for this article. I am a contributor who happens to be guest editing the website while Paul Dailing is away for a few days. You can take up the issue with him at pauld@patch.com when he returns on Sunday. And if those young adults you know need something to do this weekend, instead of drinking, you can send them this link (http://mokena.patch.com/search/events?when=2011-06-09). Our calendar has plenty of ideas. Thanks.
