Mokena Man Charged with Hate Crime over Fight with New Neighbor

Richard M. Cyplik, 28, is accused of saying derogatory terms to two men, according to a report.

A Mokena man faces a hate crime charge after allegedly spouting racially-charged words and spitting on a man, according to a report.

Richard M. Cyplik 28, of the 11600 block of Seminole Court, is charged with several other crimes, including aggravated assault, Sun-Times Media reports.

Cyplik is accused of brandishing a knife, spewing derogatory terms and threatening a new neighbor and a man who was helping him move in, the report states. Both of the men were black. Cyplik's girlfriend also broke up a fight between him and one of the men.

According to the report, Cyplik told police the men started shouting at him when he and his girlfriend returned home and that he had tried to make peace with them.
