UPDATED: Mokena Man Dies After Driving into Creek

The 21-year-old was found dead in a vehicle in Jackson Creek in rural Manhattan Township Monday morning.

Authorities are investigating the death of a Mokena man who was found inside a vehicle that settled in a creek on Monday.

Robert K. Hammar, 21, was found dead in a 1997 Dodge pickup truck stopped in Jackson Creek around 10:30 a.m. Monday, according to the Will County Sheriff's Office. 

Hammar was driving the pickup truck north on South Cherry Hill Road Monday morning, and was about a quarter mile north of Spangler Road in Manhattan Township when the truck went off the road, according to the sheriff's office. The truck crossed over the creek and struck an embankment along the Creek, according to the sheriff's office. 

Hammar was found inside the vehicle that came to rest in the creek, according to the a release from the coroner's office. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, and his injuries were extensive, according to the sheriff's office. No one else was found at the scene.

The Will County Sheriff's Office is still investigating the death. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

The final cause of death will be determined after the autopsy, toxicology screenings and traffic reports.
