UPDATED: Family Wants 'Justice and Closure' After Hit-And-Run Kills Mokena Man

Shane Kreke, 37, was killed after a car struck his motorcycle and fled the scene, family said.

Shane Kreke's family and friends will always remember his laughter, his brother said.

"Never for a minute was he a shy person," said Aaron Kreke, 29, of Crown Point, Ind., speaking on behalf of the family. "He was making jokes in the hospital yesterday."

Shane Kreke, 37, of the 8800 block of Clare Avenue, Mokena, died at 5:01 p.m. Tuesday at St. James Hospital and Health Care Centers in Olympia Fields, according to a Sun-Times Media report. Shane had been in the hospital since Saturday night, when a car crashed into his motorcycle at U.S. 30 and Brookwood Drive and fled, his brother said.

Shane Kreke had lived in Mokena for eight on nine years, Aaron said. He is survived by his brother, his parents and his wife of seven years, Christine.

"They were actually considering releasing him yesterday," Aaron said. "It was a shock to all of us."

The crash was at 7:20 p.m. Saturday, still light out, Aaron said. Shane was coming back from helping his brother with a catering job when a car struck the motorcycle Shane was riding. The car sped off.

"We just really want to find the person who did it. Obviously, any family will want the closure. It's not going to bring him back, but it'll hopefully put the person behind bars and they won't do it again," Aaron said. "We're out for justice and closure."

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office lists the cause of death as multiple injuries sustained in the crash.

Messages left the Olympia Fields Police were not immediately returned Wednesday morning.

A former college football player at the University of Wisconsin and Southern Illinois University, Shane Kreke loved barbecue (his specialty was pulled pork), motorcycles and Christine. Shane and Christine went off to Hawaii to celebrate their anniversary last month, Aaron said.

Shane had worked for his brother, a chef in Chicago, for nearly two years.

"It was just great getting to work with your brother every day," Aaron Kreke said. "My best friend, my brother."

The wake for Shane Patrick Kreke will be 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 17, at Chapel Lawn, 8178 Cline Ave. Schererville, Ind. 46375. Funeral 10:30 a.m. at either St. Michaels in Schererville or at Chapel Lawn.

This makes the second motorcycle-related fatality to claim a Mokena resident this month.

This story will be updated as it develops.
