Mokena Man Threatens Frankfort Couple and Dog With Circular Saw

A neighbor allegedly brandished a saw and yelled that he would cut off the heads of the dog and its owners, according to a Sheriff's Office report.

A Mokena man threatened his Frankfort neighbors and their dog with a circular saw Sunday, claiming the dog's barking was upsetting him, according to a Will County Sheriff's Office report.

Richard D. Zmolek, 50, of the 19500 block of Catulpa Street in Mokena, was charged with assault and brought to a county holding facility in Crete. He was released on a $1,000 bond, and his court hearing is scheduled for May 12.

Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said deputies responded to a call from the couple, who live in the 19000 block of Walnut Street in Frankfort. According to reports, the couple said Zmolek came outside in the backyard directly behind their house and yelled, "Let your dog out! I'm going to cut his head off! I'm going to cut your heads off too!"

The couple said Zmolek had an extension cord with a circular saw attached to it running from his garage to the corner of his property, according to Hoffmeyer.

When deputies arrived on the scene, they found the saw and extension cord in the backyard and spoke with Zmolek, who said all the dogs in the neighborhood were a problem, barking all hours of the day and night, according to Hoffmeyer. He told deputies that if the owners weren't going to deal with it, he was going to take care of it, according to the report.

The couple said this wasn't the first time Zmolek threatened their dog, according to Hoffmeyer. But Sheriff's Office records show this was the first time the couple had called or filed a report against Zmolek.

I have to side with the man with the saw here. Barking dogs will drive me over the edge too. It's very inconsiderate of people to let their dogs bark. He is entitled to a little peace. By the way it wasn't a chain saw it was a circular saw on an extension cord. Not really very dangerous. Just stay away from him!

I had a neighbor who would come home from bartending about 1 or 2 o'clock in the morning and tie her dog to a tree for a long time. She would let her dog bark and bark and wake me up every night...once awake, I was too upset to go back to sleep until 4 or 5 in the morning. The police wouldn't do anything. I had a nervous breakdown and eventually had to sell my house and move. The dog was about 25 feet away from my bedroom window and was a chocolate lab. I get sick to this day every time I see a chocolate lab...like post traumatic stress. I used to lie there awake and think of ways to kill that dog. I knew then I had truly lost my mind...so I just decided to move. It seems that only people with the dogs have rights. Believe me, going night after night with no sleep or even in the day, a barking dog that won't shut up will turn you into someone you don't even recognize. It is a true hell.

Barking dogs provoke a lot of bad reactions. That's easy to understand. We use barking dogs to torture Islamic militants, right? Sleep deprivation drives people crazy, right?
