Neighborhood Alert: Two Home Burglaries in Grasmere Subdivision

Suspects might have carried stolen items in a bag decorated with elephants, giraffes and zebras.

Mokena Police are looking for two teenage boys who were seen in the backyard of a home that was later burglarized.

The burglary took place Oct. 1 and was the second in a pair of home burglaries that occurred last week in the Grasmere subdivision. The other burglary happened the day before, on Sept. 30.

Both burglaries took place during the daytime, when residents were not at home, according to the release. The perpetrators entered through windows at the back of the residences and took jewelry, cash, cameras and other small items, police said. It is believed they also took a quilted white, black and tan bag decorated with safari animals, in which they might have carried the stolen objects during the Oct. 1 burglary.

Because of the similarities in the burglaries, police believe they are related, Cmdr. Dan Rankovich said.

One of the teenage boys seen on Oct. 1 had thick, dark hair, was possibly about 5-foot-6 and weighed approximately 175 pounds. The other suspect had close-cropped red hair, a thin build and was possibly between 5-foot-2 and 5-foot-5.

Mokena Police are asking residents with any information about the burglaries to contact the department at 708-479-3912. They also are reminding residents with alarm systems to use them when leaving their homes unattended.

Rankovich said police have scheduled a Neighborhood Watch meeting for Thursday at 8 p.m. at Mokena Junior High School.
