Police Blotter: DUI, Burglary, Underage Drinking and Pot Arrest

Mokena Police reports for April 27–May 8.

TUESDAY, May 8

No License Plate Leads to Pot Arrest

Police initiated a traffic stop on Philip M. Basil. 23, of the 8100 block of Harvest Dr. in Frankfort, after spotting his car at the intersection of LaGrange Road and 195th Street, due to no having a front license plate. According to the police report, while speaking with Basil, officers noted a strong smell of burnt cannabis coming from his car. When questioned about the smell, Basile stated he had marijuana in his car and showed it to officers. He was then arrested and taken to the Mokena Police Department, where he posted a $2,000 I-bond and was released, pending a June 12 court date.

'Pimp' Popped for DUI

On May 5 at 7:58 p.m. Mokena Police stopped John W. Kelleher, 42, of the 19900 block of S. Mallory Drive in Frankfort, at the intersection of Old LaGrange Road and Hickory Creek Drive, after observing Kelleher exit Stoney Point Grill & Bar in a stumbling fashion, failing to signal twice exiting the parking lot and turning eastbound in the westbound lanes of Hickory Lane. 

During the traffic stop, officers noted a strong odor of alcoholic beverages and asked him to submit to standard field sobriety tests, which Kelleher refused.

Officers then arrested Kelleher on suspicion of DUI and transported him to the Mokena Police Department. While driving to the department, the Kelleher began badgering officers, saying that he was being “assaulted,” and questioning if officers were going to, “beat [him] up.”

At the station, Kelleher continued to refuse to cooperate with officers and told officers that, “I'm a pimp,” when questioned about his occupation.

Kelleher posted his driver's license and $100 cash as bond and was released, pending a June 5 court date in Joliet.

THURSDAY, May 3

Signs of Burglary, Nothing Taken

Mokena police officers responded to a call of a potential burglary at a business in the 8000 block of 189th Street around 8:30 a.m. According to the report, police spoke with an empolyee who told them that he observed a garage door of the business showed footprints and pry marks on it, he also said he already had notified the owner.

When the owner arrived, he told police he was at the business until 10:30 p.m. the night before and the door was locked and secure. After walking through the business, the owner told officers there didn't appear to be anything missing, or even disturbed.

FRIDAY, April 27

Underage Drinking at Buske Park

Jacob K. Duffy, 19, of the 20000 block of S. Hilltop Road, Kyle M. Sciak, 19, of the 19000 block of Glennell Ave., Ryan J. Testa, 17, of the 19000 block of Glennell Ave., Casy D. Vanbaber, 20, of the 11000 block of W. 194th Street, and a 14-year-old minor were all cited for illegal consumption of alcohol by minor and illegal possession of alcohol by a minor after police responded to a report of a fight at Buske Park around 10:45 p.m. The boys all said they were, “horsing around,” but not fighting at the park. Police found a case of Miller Light, a case of Busch Beer and one bottle of Captain Morgan Spiced Rum 10 feet from the boys.

The boys were taken to the Mokena Police Department, where they were all charged and released on $750 I-bonds; the minor was released to his aunt. All five are due to appear in court on June 11, in Frankfort.
