Man's drunken driving results in woman's death, man hits hydrant, uproots shrub: this week's roundup of drunken driving arrests in the Southland.

 

July 6: Investigators recreating a vehicle accident that resulted in a woman's death believe Matthew Senica was driving over 70 mph when he struck Heidi Roseen’s car. Senica, 25, of the 13700 block of 88th Avenue in Orland Park, is charged with felony aggravated driving under the influence. He had been drinking in Chicago for hours before he drove south on LaGrange Road, and struck Roseen’s car at the intersection with 95th Street, according to Cook County Sheriff Spokesman Frank Bilecki. When facing court later in the week, the judge placed a $1 million bail against him, which means he would need $100,000 to walk the streets before his trial. Senica remains in custody. Past charges against him include reckless conduct, criminal damage to property, battery, domestic battery and a DUI.

June 29: 
Police pulled over an SUV after seeing it changing lanes repeatedly without signaling and crossing over the center line, while near 157th Street and LaGrange Road around 11:55 p.m. The driver’s breath smelled like alcohol and she failed field sobriety tests, police said.  Laura R. Pinto, 46, of the 7500 block of Claremont Drive in Tinley Park, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence with a blood-alcohol level greater than .08, improper lane use and driving a vehicle without a plate cover.

June 25: 
Police were called about a man possibly trying to steal a boat at Lake Sedgewick around 5:15 p.m. A man at the lake said he was walking with his two children and wife near the lake, when they saw a man apparently trying to untie a docked boat, and was having trouble doing so, according to the report. The man spoke in a hostile way toward the family when he saw they were looking at them, and then cursed at them while running toward them, police said. The man tried then to apologize, but the wife had already called police, according to the report. A red Ford SUV was then seen driving away from the lake, and police pulled it over near the pool parking lot, police said. The driver’s breath smelled like alcohol, he failed field sobriety tests, and officers found four bottles with alcohol in them inside the SUV, according to the report.

The SUV matched an earlier report in the 14900 block of Highland Avenue, where the vehicle was driving north, and suddenly swerved into the southbound lane, coming close to children standing near the west side curb, police said. That caller said the driver cursed at him and flipped the middle finger while driving away, according to the report. A 17-year-old male from Orland Park, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence with a blood-alcohol content greater than .08, illegal transportation of alcohol and reckless driving.

July 4: Devlon L. Word, 45, of Chicago was charged with driving under the influence while speeding, driving under the influence and driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content level of more than .08. Police curbed ward after witnessing him speeding down Western Avenue. According to reports, at 5:41 a.m. Word broke the speed limit on Western Avenue near 97th Street. Police stopped him at 103rd street and smelled alcohol on his breath, noticed slurred speech and bloodshot eyes, police said.  According to reports, Word failed all field sobriety tests. Police took Word into custody for driving under the influence and the breathalyzer test gave a sample of .254, reports said. According to police, he was also charged with criminal damage to property.

July 4:
Steven Molina, 25, of Worth was charged with speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the combined influence of alcohol and drugs, fleeing and attempting to elude police, having a blood alcohol content level of .08 or more and unlawful consumption of marijuana. Evergreen Park Police said at 5:05 a.m., officers stopped a car speeding down 95th Street near Troy Avenue. According to reports, while the officer spoke with Molina, he had trouble finding his driver’s license and handed the officer his debit card, then overlooked his insurance card several times. Police said there was a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and alcohol on Molina’s breath. Police said while the officer went back to the squad car, Molina attempted to drive away. The officer stopped Molina, took him out of his car and had him perform field sobriety tests, police said. According to reports, police took Molina to Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Care Centers to take a blood and urine DUI test. The blood draw resulted in a blood alcohol content level of .21 and tested positive for cannabinoid, the substance of marijuana, police said. Police took him to the police station and issued him tickets, reports said. Officers didn’t find any marijuana in the car, reports said.

July 8: Alex J. Hommema, 25, of the 10900 block of Swallow Tail Lane, was charged with speeding, disobeying a stop sign and driving under the influence with a blood-alcohol content over 0.08 after a traffic stop near the intersection of LaGrange Road and Old Frankfort Way. Hommema was released on bond, and his next court date is Aug. 1.

July 7:
William J. Larocque, 29, of the 430 block of Foley Avenue in Kankakee, was charged with driving under the influence with a blood-alcohol content over 0.08, improper lane use, following too closely and driving without insurance after a traffic stop at the 20100 block of LaGrange Road. Larocque was released on bond, and his next court date is Aug. 2.

July 5:
Daniel P. Moruzzi, 23, of the 600 block of Bittersweet Lane in New Lenox, was charged with improper lane usage and driving under the influence with a blood-alcohol content of more than 0.08 after a traffic stop at the intersection of Heritage Drive and Pembrook Court. Moruzzi was released on bond, and his next court date is Aug. 2.

 July 2: John C. Hernandez, 19, of the 7000 block of Kennedy Road in Peotone, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after police stopped him near the intersection of Joe Orr Road and Ashland Avenue for erratic driving, according to the report. Asked if he had been drinking, Hernandez told police he had several beers throughout the night. After taking field sobriety tests, Hernandez was taken into custody, police said. He was also charged with disobeying a stop sign, improper lane use, no driver's license on person and having a blood-alcohol content above .08. according to the report.

July 7: Nicholas Hampton, 27, of 1550 W. 187th St., Homewood, was charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a property damage accident. An eyewitness to the crash gave police Hampton’s license plate number. Hampton was arrested at his home at 7:58 a.m. after admitting he was too drunk to drive and telling police he did not remember what it was he hit. The vehicle Hampton drove struck a fire hydrant, uprooted a large shrub and left automobile debris scattered in front of two homes in the 1600 block of Pine Road. In custody, Hampton’s blood-alcohol concentration measured .259. He has a court date of August 20 at the Cook County Courthouse in Markham.

July 6: Crisantos Granados, 43, of the 7300 block of 84th Place in Bridgeview, was charged with driving under the influence, driving on a suspended license, transporting open alcohol and failure to reduce speed to avoid and accident. Around 8:47 p.m. Granados was involved in an accident at 127th Street and Harlem Avenue, police said. He showed signs of being under the influence and a breath test revealed a blood alcohol level of .239, police said.  

July 4:
Genevieve Thorpe, 45, of Lenox Court in Lemont, was charged with driving under the influence. She was stopped at 11:22 p.m. for improper lane use. Police say that she failed both a field sobriety test and a breath test.

 June 20: Hector Morales, 39, of the 6600 block of West Vogt Street in , was arrested around 10 p.m. near the intersection of 159th Street and Oak Park Avenue. He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of with a blood-alcohol level greater than 0.08, failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and driving without a valid driver's license.
