May 18: John E. Sanders, 61, of the 22400 block or Arquilla Drive in Richton Park, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after police stopped him at a seat belt enforcement zone, noticing he had an expired registration, according to the report. Police then gave Sanders field sobriety tests before taking him into custody, according to the report. Police found an open 40-ounce bottle of malt liquor in Sanders' vehicle, netting him an additional charge of illegal transportation of alcohol, according to the report.
May 20: Police charged Mark J. Kolar, 47, of the 13000 block of S. 84th Avenue, Orland Park, for driving under the influence of alcohol, improper lane usage/median violation, and BAC in excess of .08. Officers reported seeing Kolar cross the double yellow line near train tracks in the 10000 block of W. 191st Street. Officers witnessed the car drive up the median, before officers initiated a traffic stop. When asked why he was driving on the median Kolar told police, “I don't know what I was thinking.” Officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on Kolar's breath and asked if he would submit to standard field sobriety tests, which he did and failed. Kolar was taken to the Mokena Police Department, where he blew a .186 and was charged. He posted bond and is scheduled to appear in court on June 5.
May 30: Robert Edyburn, 33, of Berwyn, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and improper lane use after New Lenox police stopped him in the 300 block of Heartland Drive at 11:19 p.m.
May 30: William Quackenbush, 46, of the 200 block of Pacific Street in Frankfort, was stopped by police after they say he ran a red light at Laraway Road and Calistoga Drive in New Lenox at about 4:30 p.m. Police questioned him and charged him with driving under the influence of alcohol and possession of marijuana.
May 27: Emilio Chavez, 18, 950 Coach Road, Homewood, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and improper lane usage. Police said they saw Chavez’s vehicle weaving as he headed north on Reigel Road near 191st Street at 4:12 a.m. He smelled of alcohol, had glassy, bloodshot eyes and failed field sobriety tests, according to the police report.
May 18: Police were called about a hit and run accident in the 143rd Street and LaGrange Road, around 9:25 p.m. A witness told police that a car was seen driving through a red light at the intersection while heading west and struck a car turning north onto LaGrange Road, before driving away without stopping, police said. The officer found the offending car pulling into Crystal Tree Drive off 143rd Street, according to the report. The driver said he hadn’t drunk alcohol, though police said his breath smelled like alcohol and that he failed field sobriety tests. The driver had four previous DUI arrests, and was charged with aggravated DUI in light of that, police said. Jan Podwika, 39, of the 15900 block of 139th Street in Homer Glen, was charged with aggravated driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident and disobeying a traffic control light.
