Woman Assaulted on Mokena Forest Preserve Path

A man ran at a woman, grabbing at her while she was walking the Hickory Creek Preserve La Porte Road Access Trail April 17. The woman reported the encounter to police, but no arrests have been made.

A woman was walking a trail through the when a man ran at her, grabbing at her before fleeing the scene, according to .

The woman was alone on the La Porte Road Access trail around noon on April 17 when the man accosted her, asked a question and then rode off on a bike. Shortly afterward, he returned without the bike and grabbed at her arms and breasts before running away.

The woman called 9-1-1, and forest preserve police responded immediately.

“She called us right away and, actually, one of our officers happened to be in the La Porte Road parking lot when she called 9-1-1,” said Forest Preserve Police Lt. Tracy Phillips. “So, we were there pretty quickly.”

The woman described the man as Hispanic and wearing a hooded sweatshirt. No other details were relayed. A search of the area by Mokena and Frankfort police, along with Will County Sheriff's police and forest preserve police did not result in any arrests.

“This has not happened before. It's very isolated on this trail, this is our first one,” said Phillips.

She added that any incidents—including past incidents—like this one can be reported to Will County Forest Preserve Police by calling (815) 727-8700. Immediate assistance can be contacted at 9-1-1.

Maybe Mokena and Frankfort can implement a bicycle police officer to ride there daily.

Good morning, I also walk this trail with my dog and I seen a man last weekend in the woods close to the creek following me. I also carry my phone if I needed for emergency. I think a bike police officer on this trail is a good idea. This is such a beautiful place to walk, it would be a shame that some one can make one scared to enjoy it..

Do we have any other information about the attacker? Age, height, weight, hair color, ethnicity? I understand these things happen so quickly that sometimes its hard to register details, but if more is available it would be helpful.

I am a runner and I practise martial arts. It is imperative everyone who exercises alone on the trails to take a self defense class. I recommend my coach in Midlothian who runs regular seminars - 2.5 hours for $10 - you cannot put a price on safety! Here are his details www.denniswrightmartialarts.com or call/text 708-921-8205 - hes a really nice guy and bikes the trails also.

Are you kidding me? So we can start killing people for minor infractions? Give me a break! Going back to the wild west is not the answer.
Michael Muckian April 25, 2012 at 03:51 pm
That would be a great idea. Having a police presence is the answer-- not arming citizens.
Mad Dad April 25, 2012 at 04:11 pm
Right, why is no description provided?
It's me... April 25, 2012 at 05:01 pm
There is nothing wrong with the "wild west" as you put it. I'm sure those armed wouldn't shoot at someone for minor "infractions". But just knowing people could be armed would probably make someone think twice. There are many states that still let people carry guns. And, if I remember right, crime is less in those states. It may have changed, I'd have to check the latest stats. It's not like responsible gun owners would walk around killing people. Give them a bit more credit.
Jeff Spero April 25, 2012 at 07:03 pm
Hey Michael... Did you read the STORY???? Sexual Assaulted. And you think that is a minor infraction? Your right bring on the "wild west" as you put it. That would have been one less piece of worth less trash in our town. Or maybe YOU think that behavior is NORMAL!
Michael Muckian April 25, 2012 at 07:17 pm
Yes, I read the story and understand that the woman was groped. Putting guns into anyone's hands and giving them the right to act as judge, jury, and executioner is a giant step backwards in a civilized society. We have police to protect and the legal system to punish on an intellectual and controlled manner. Allowing (or encouraging) people to carry guns will escalate violence and bypass our legal protections and systems. Handguns are made to kill people, nothing more.
It's me... April 25, 2012 at 07:42 pm
Like I said responsible gun owners. And by responsible I mean those that do it legally. Those that don't are the people that go around acting anyway they want. Do you think the people in states that allowed to carry guns go around acting like uncivilized people shooting everyone in site!? Educate yourself on the states (people) that can legally carry guns. They aren't that uncivilized. And when is protecting yourself or your property uncivilized?

Hi, Annie and Mad Dad,
Very few details were given about the suspect. We've updated the story to include what little information we have. Thanks, Lauren Traut Associate Regional Editor, Patch

Michael
Maybe you could walk the trail and if the groper approaches you, swing your purse and knock the culprit down.

It's common knowledge that the Hickory Creek Preserve sits on an ancient Indian burial ground. Until the spirits of these painted warriors are appeased no one is safe...

@Michael Muckian- How many deaths occured in the US last year at the hands of a legally armed citizen? Maybe 3 at the most. As a woman I can tell you if a man I didn't know grabbed me unenexpectedly I can only assume he intends to do me harm. For some reason this time he got nervous and ran. How many times do you think he will lose his nerve and not follow through with whatever evil he had in mind before he actually goes through with it? A person has the right to protect themselves from men such as this. Besides, a nice little purse gun like a .38 probably wouldn't kill him anyway, he'd just be dropped a lot faster than the police could get there (if you could even dial your phone).

For some reason everybody here in illinois want the gun law past. They also bring up the fact that other states have it and crime is down. This is true in some states but each states society is a little bit different than Chicago area. People in the Chicago area have a tendency to be a little bit more fearful for others. Illinois been proven fact they have a bigger percentage of road rage than any other state so lets give all those people who can't control their anger of gun.

Any details on the attack that happened in Frankfort on Old Plank Trail?
Metro April 27, 2012 at 01:52 pm
Scorpion,
Violence is not the answer. Swinging a purse at an individual could really hurt the poor fella. Hey, the forest preserve is a nice, low cost way for an unemployed, down on his luck guy, to cop a feel. Have some sympathy...geez.
Metro April 27, 2012 at 02:09 pm
Rich B,
You are so right. Illinois citizens are weak and not very smart. The only Illinois citizens that should be allowed to have guns are Pat Quinn, Rahm Emanuel and Richard Daley, don't forget Madigan. Only these men are superior, as they are smarter and stronger than the typical Illinois commoner. They will protect us from any and all harm. Sweet dreams.

I say hire a few cute female cops and let the go jogging in the forest. Then when the punks hassle them, they can cut their family jewels off.
It sucks that one or two creeps will keep all the local Milf's from being able to go for a jog. Face it, it's hard enough to keep in shape in Illinois without being restricted to running indoors. Maybe the runners could tag along w/ local cross-country teams for safety or set-up running groups? I guess it defeats the purpose of setting your own pace and getting some solitude. Few jerks ruin it for so many again.

Walk with someone ...not alone.
Bob Thomas May 1, 2012 at 03:21 pm
That's right Rich, Illinois residents have yet to earn to right to defend themselves with a gun, unlike 49 other states that give their residents the right to carry a weapon!

Thanks for the tip. I have asked to join the FB group unfortunatly with my sons schedules only certain days of the week work for me but if we can hook up that is great. I do have my mace for when I must run alone.
Suzanne May 1, 2012 at 04:49 pm
@Karen - walking with someone is a great solution.
Its funny how fast the topic shifts from the actual concern. A woman was walking on the trail and got assaulted. No one here knows all the details. But here are some things to consider: Do not walk alone. Do not have headphones covering both ears, or in both ears. Pay attention to your surroundings, BE AWARE Do not act like a victim, make eye contact, take mental notes of who you are passing Always have a phone on you, for any and every emergency. Call 911 if you feel unsafe The Police departments do have bike patrols as well as ATV patrols. Sounds easy to say lets put a cop on a bike on the trail by my house. But think about how large Will County is and how many preserves there are. The Forest Preserves patrol as much as they can in their shifts and rely on other agencies to assist with patrol. Understaffing is a huge problem here. Police officers cannot prevent crime, but police presence can.

There was no attack on the Old Plank Trail. Rumors, rumors, rumors...... A guy that looked like the "attacker" from the hickory creek groping was seen on the Old Plank Trail, by one of the victim's friends. This is all public knowledge if you just call and ask.
Karen Schultz May 2, 2012 at 01:21 am
Citizens can be smart about their activities ...walking alone through preserves are not a good idea in any location. Adults, children should all act smart and bike, walk, run with friends. WE could not possibly expect police to be everywhere or cover all the trails so travel smart, take a friend or more. WE all need eachother's support in exercise, so it is a welcomed practice to invite others.
Karen Schultz May 2, 2012 at 01:24 am
I would love to start a walking and biking group that uses the trails in Mokena. Interested in early evenings? 7pm weekends? 7am both? Meet at the community center. If the weather is poor we can use the center and keep the routine. Offer alternative times and commit to your group! Group coaching can offer healthy recipes and other healthy activities to one another.
S. May 2, 2012 at 01:29 am
It's Me, Metro and Bob Thomas ...You all nailed it ...and Quinn, Emanuel and Daley should try it for a month without the additional body guards and they might sing a different tune!!
Howard May 2, 2012 at 02:21 pm
While I think concealed carry is not a bad idea, In many states carrying in forest preserves, state parks, etc. is prohibited. That being said, a well armed citizen creates better neighbors than a fence. To Michael above. I understand your concern about armed citizens but if you watch the news in Chicago, the reality is that police generally cannot protect you before a crime happens. They just come to pick up the pieces and console the victims families. If citizens aren't allowed to carry legally, then only thugs can be armed. Is that the way you want to live, in fear?
