Election 2011: Library Board Candidate Phyllis Jacobek

To get a more in-depth view of candidates, Mokena Patch asked them several issue-based questions.

Three candidates are campaigning for two seats on the. Newcomer (and former library director) k answers three issue-based questions about library programs and its budget.

What are the biggest issues facing the library district right now?

Support of ongoing technology is a big issue. The library has come so far with technology in the last 15 years and it needs to continue down that avenue. We’ve looked at expansion of technology, possibly in a satellite building. Also, there’s the possibility of being open more hours, especially weekend hours and Sundays. The library tried this a few years ago and it wasn’t met with great results, but I feel that we should try it again. Recently, e-books were made available, and those are being met with great results. I feel that we should continue to look down those avenues and offer materials in as many formats as we can, while staying within the means of the budget.

What programs could be cut from the budget?

I’m very optimistic that programming does not need to be cut. The library’s success is based on programming that has reached many more users of the library while remaining within the budget. As long as they continue to work within the financial parameters of the budget, nothing needs to be cut.

What programs must absolutely not be cut from the budget?

Without a doubt, the programming for the children cannot be cut, which has been met with a great response from the community. And when I say children, I mean all age groups. The programs for children age nine to high school have seen a great response. Then for younger children, there are PJ story hours, readings with Mandy and more. These offer such a great, diverse programming situation for the community. I feel that library users really rely on these programs and enjoy them.
