Mokena Park District Breaks Ground on New Program Center

A group of 3-year-olds got into the act by digging up dirt with mini shovels April 23 at Main Park, Sun-Times Media reports.

Mokena Community Park District and Village officials along with a lively group of 3-year-olds celebrated the beginning of the construction phase for a $585,000, 4,600-square-foot facility with a ribbon cutting and groundbreaking ceremony April 23 on LaPorte Road.

The program center will feature a multipurpose room, two preschools and a couple of classrooms.

After the park district restructured bonds for Yunker Farm, which is across the street from The Oaks Fitness Center, funds became available for the new program center, according to the Sun-Times Media.

The new facility is scheduled to open in August at Main Park, 10925 W. LaPorte Road. The nearby Cady Building, which currently houses the preschool program, is too small to accommodate the community, according to Jim Romanek, park district executive.

The current crop of 3-year-old preschoolers were welcomed to the ceremony, the Sun-Times Media reports. They got a hands-on opportunity to literally dig in with mini-shovels.

How do you get a group of elected officials to smile for a picture? Just say "Fees!" Mokena Community Park District, now it dawns on me why they leave the word “public” out of the name. It is a business. Shouldn’t it be Park District “LLC” or “Inc”. ? Why are our tax dollars going for businesses in the park district that cost the community money to use them? How many “businesses” is the park district involved in? Health clubs, kindergarten, where is the old “come on kids we will give you baseballs and come play ball for free at the park?” Old days are gone I guess. If as noted some monies were found by restructuring bonds, did anyone think of perhaps rebating money to the tax payers? Or at the very least NOT applying an annual tax levy every year to the community? Where is the transparency in this group? No budget on line, no check book on line. What “profits” are derived from all the charges / fees collected? I guess nuttin is free, and there is no more public in park districts anymore. A nickel aint worth a dime anymore.

It's too bad that the park district didn't make the prudent decision to simply rent space at MES which has plenty of space to go around. Or, why didn't they have the foresight to add a couple of rooms to The Oaks when it was built?

I agree with both. Use what space we already have and improve the programs you offer. Have they looked at Park District activities other towns have. The activities they offer are the same ones we had when we moved here 20 years ago.

Park districts are used to set-up special daycare for public officals' kids. They will tell you it's for the community, but you won't be able to get your kid in. They have a semi-private world on our dime. NL ParkDist has their semi-private facility on Laraway. Same deal. Just try to get your kid in there. $127 / sq ft . for this new facility. VIP Pace is similar scam. They will give you a rideshare van for $50/ month to get to work. http://www.pacebus.com/sub/vanpool/ Perhaps this is some of the fat that could be trimmed so our kids have gym, music and art in school?

Maybe Park District is trying to make this building "crash" proof ! 127 Dollars a square foot!! for what? for who? and how much will taxpayers have to pay to get use of it and its programs AFTER their tax dollars built it? Maybe they can charge to take tours of gold faucets and such at $127 sq. ft. How much tax revenue DOES this park district take in? Where is their budget / checkbook on line? Half a million dollars for ? Classrooms? Dont we have enough "classrooms" in town? Good Grief !!!
