Mokena Park District Breaks Ground on New Program Center

A group of 3-year-olds got into the act by digging up dirt with mini shovels April 23 at Main Park, Sun-Times Media reports.

Mokena Community Park District and Village officials along with a lively group of 3-year-olds celebrated the beginning of the construction phase for a $585,000, 4,600-square-foot facility with a ribbon cutting and groundbreaking ceremony April 23 on LaPorte Road.

The program center will feature a multipurpose room, two preschools and a couple of classrooms.

After the park district restructured bonds for Yunker Farm, which is across the street from The Oaks Fitness Center, funds became available for the new program center, according to the Sun-Times Media.

The new facility is scheduled to open in August at Main Park, 10925 W. LaPorte Road. The nearby Cady Building, which currently houses the preschool program, is too small to accommodate the community, according to Jim Romanek, park district executive.

The current crop of 3-year-old preschoolers were welcomed to the ceremony, the Sun-Times Media reports. They got a hands-on opportunity to literally dig in with mini-shovels.
