Mokena Police Get New Union Contract, 2.5 Percent Raise

The village board on Monday approved a new contract with Teamsters Local 700, which represents 23 police officers under the rank of sergeant.

officers will see another short contract, but one that gives 23 officers represented by Teamsters Local 700 a 2.5-percent raise over the next year.

The Mokena Village Board unanimously approved the new contract during their regular board meeting at Monday night. The one-year contract is retroactive going back to July 1, when the last contract expired.

It will represent an increase in the village's salary costs of $61,384. It is in-line with the raises seen by non-union employees, Village Administrator John Downs said.

Historically, the union has had four-year contracts, Downs said. But since the economy went downhill, the village and union have negotiated shorter contracts so they won't be locked into a worst-of-times contract if the economy improves.

The previous contract was a two-year contract with a 2-percent raise in the first year and a 1.5-percent raise in the second, Downs said. The contract before that was a four-year contract with officers receiving a 4.5-percent raise each year.
