Spring Means More Route 30 Construction

The Lincoln-Way communities are gearing up for more lane closures on Route 30

While flowers will be breaking ground and reaching toward the sun, construction crews will be breaking pavement and digging a path for new lanes on Route 30 in New Lenox, Mokena and Frankfort.

Flashing signs have been alerting motorists about pending lane closures, said New Lenox Village Engineer Will Nash. There are currently two lanes of traffic in each direction along Route 30. There will be daily lane closures throughout the project.  All lanes will be open again at the end of the day.

  • All side streets and driveways are open.
  • There are some driveways and side streets that have asphalt small asphalt ramps to transition from new pavement to the existing binder course of asphalt as well as some temporary drives along the north side of the road.

Nash said he and the staff have been monitoring the areas throughout the winter, but spring time marks the typical construction season. Construction crews are expected to dig in about April 1, said Nash.

The contractor has started construction on the sound wall near the Wellington Townhomes. When the work on the foundations is complete on this sound wall they will move east to the sound wall near the Bluestone Bay East Townhomes.

  • As weather permits they will begin to place top soil in median areas and on some of the ditch areas. They will be using some of the dirt from the stockpiles in front of Lincoln-Way Central High School, at 1801 E. Route 30. The piles will get smaller but will not be totally gone until the summer.

Nash said to expect lane closures beginning in April and lasting for a few months.

On its website, the Village of Frankfort advises motorists to "proceed with caution."

Mokena Village officials remind motorists that the speed limit moving through designated construction zones is 35 miles per hour. "Please slow down and observe this limit, as construction workers' safety depends on your compliance.  Remember also that cellular phone use is prohibited in construction zones."
