Village Board Declares Water Conservation Day

At its Monday, Aug. 22 meeting Village Board recognizes Thursday, Aug. 25, as Water Conservation Day in conjunction with The Responsible Bathroom Water Conservation Tour, which comes to M. Cooper Supply, in Mokena, the same day.

How seriously does Mokena take water conservation? With water conservation efforts posted and enforced within the village and a focus on keeping water levels in village reservoirs high, it's safe to say pretty seriously. The Village Board proved that point again at its Monday night meeting by proclaiming Thursday, Aug. 25, Water Conservation Day in the village.

“The fact that [the Village] recognizes the urgency that [the community] needs to conserve water, it's nice to have the support of the Village,” said Greg Goode, vice president of M. Cooper Supply.

The idea for Water Conservation Day came from M. Cooper Supply, a Mokena business, and American Standard, and Mayor Joe Werner said that the efforts by the two companies within the Mokena community to promote and offer water conservation tools is worth noting.

“It's a one-time investment, that has a lifetime of conservation attached to it,” Werner said. “If you can buy a toilet or a faucet that will automatically use less water by its design, there's the easiest way to increase conservation. If 10 or 15 percent of our public did that, it would be like the recycling movement.”

The proclamation stems from a nationwide promotion by American Standard called, “The Responsible Bathroom Water Conservation Tour.” The Tour comes to Mokena on Thursday, with a stop at M. Cooper Supply, 8605 Spring Lake Dr., “to reach out, educate and inform the public on ways to save water, energy and money without sacrifice.”

“This is the first time we've had something like this,” Goode said. “[American Standard] is serious, they didn't just buy a truck and say, 'Hey let's go, we make product.' They're really standing behind [the tour].”

M. Cooper Supply will host the tour, which will feature a 40-foot-by-20-foot tour bus complete with working demonstrations, free food and drinks, and raffles during the event, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 25.
