Village Board Recognizes Mayor for Philanthropy Award

Mayor Joe Werner received the Southwest Suburban Philanthropic Network's Governmental Philanthropic Award earlier this month.

With few other items on the agenda, the Mokena Village Board of Trustees took some time Monday to recognize Mayor Joe Werner for his charity work.

Werner received the Governmental Philanthropic Award by the Southwest Suburban Philanthropic Network. Trustee George Metanias recognized the achievement and said the award goes to someone who goes "above and beyond" in the community.

Werner won the award for his extensive charity work in Mokena. He was nominated by Laura Braeunig, a Mokena resident who owns with her husband, Bob.

Werner said he had met Laura in person only twice. Knowing that Braeuning had noticed his work enough to nominate him for the award made it "10 times better," he said.

Approved on the consent agenda:

  • The board released a letter of credit issued by MB Financial Bank for earthwork and mass grading within the Alps Development by a total amount of $26,400, brining the remaining amount to $0.
  • The board approved a special event request to the to conduct its annual Christmas Fest on Nov. 20. The intermittent closure of portions of Wolf Road, Front Street, Division Street and Second Street from 1 to 7 p.m. for a parade and other activities on that date was approved as well.
