Village Board Talks Commercial, Government Building Projects
The business community in Mokena is poised for growth in 2013, according to Trustee John Mazzorana.
Ground will break on multiple building projects in Mokena in the near future.
The Mokena Village Board discussed upcoming development plans at a meeting Monday evening.
Director of Economic and Community Development Alan Zordan said that construction on a new Meijer location at the intersection of Wolf Road and Lincoln Highway is likely to begin in the coming months. Projections indicate that the store will open summer 2014.

“I’m pleased to see Meijer has announced they’re going to begin construction,” said Trustee John Mazzorana, who conducted Monday’s meeting in the absence of Mayor Joe Werner.
13 new businesses have opened in the village since Jan. 1, according to Mazzorana, who said he anticipates that more businesses will come to Mokena as construction on the new Meijer progresses.

“I think it’ll be a great asset to our village,” said Trustee George Metanias.
Also at Monday’s meeting, the board voted as part of the unanimous consent agenda to approve the site and landscape plan for a new Mokena Community Park District building.
The 4,300-square-foot multi-purpose building will be located at 10925 La Porte Road in Main Park.
“We look forward to having that building go up a little later this year,” said Village Administrator John Downs.
The board voted Monday to allow Northern Illinois Municipal Electric Cooperative to negotiate and bid the village’s electric power supply for water and sewer operations.
The services discussed Monday are unrelated to those provided through the village residential and small business electric aggregation program.
NIMEC, which includes more than 150 local governing bodies, is able to negotiate lower pricing on the electric supply due to the combined volume of the cooperative, according to documents provided by the village of Mokena.
The village joined NIMEC in 2006 and has saved $200,000 during the last six years due to its participation in the cooperative.
“We got really good pricing on this last year,” said Public Works Director Louis Tiberi.
