Know Before You Go: Facts about the Fun at D159 Carnival

There's a carnival taking place at Mokena Elementary School this weekend, which is being hosted by D159. The event will run through Sunday and offers residents a chance to get out, have fun and maybe win some prizes, too.

It's finally here! The Mokena Carnival at Mokena Elementary School is underway and kids across the community are expected to take over the area behind MES over the weekend. The carnival, which kicked off Thursday, features 20 rides, multiple carnival games and food for everyone in attendance.

“This is the best place we could have it, on the school grounds,” said Bill Phelps, who organized the event. “Without the amazing leadership within the district and at the school, this wouldn't have happened.”

Phelps said that it was his goal to have the carnival unite the community, while also giving children within the community a chance to have fun with their friends and family.

“With all the infighting, and all the other stuff about referendums, we've had to cut stuff here, we've had to cut stuff there, it's time to get back to the kids,” Phelps said. “Kids are the basis of this community and it's good for them.”

The carnival, which is being put on by Big H Amusements Carnival Rides, will last through Sunday.

Big H owner Sue Headley, who runs the company with her husband Kevin and their daughter Sevin, said that the company was excited to be back in Mokena after last year, when the company hosted a carnival in the Metra parking lot.

Friday, May 18, the first ride of every child who attends the carnival will be free. Unlimited ride bracelets are available for purchase and there is an ATM on site. There will be raffles and prizes throughout the carnival's run this weekend.
