D159 Appoints VP, Selects New Board Member

The Mokena school district's board of education appoints Joseph Spalla as vice president and selects Mokena resident Jeff Regan as a new board member at its Aug. 15 meeting.

The Board of Education reached a decision during its Aug. 15 meeting regarding the vacancies created by the . Board member Joseph Spalla, who has held the office in the past, was once again appointed to the position of vice president, which was vacated when Patrick Markham took over Troy's role as president.

"I'm happy to be in the role again," Spalla said.

The board also selected lifelong Mokena resident Jeff Regan as a new board member to fill the vacancy created by Troy's resignation. Regan became interested in the proceedings of the board of education last year when the district .

"I have three children in the school district," Regan said. "When the bus fee came out, it kind of sparked my interest in what was going on, so that's when I started following the board meetings every month and going from there."

As Regan continued to attend meetings each month, his interest and desire to get involved grew, until he got the chance to apply for a position on the board. Board members interviewed four candidates for the position on Aug. 11, ultimately deciding on Regan with a unanimous vote, according to Markham.

"I want to welcome him," Markham said. "I love the fact that he's a lifetime Mokena resident. He's been at I don't know how many meetings, I've seen him here. So he's done his due diligence and his homework, and he passed a pretty good interview that we had put forth. He was our unanimous consensus, our unanimous pick. So I welcome him to the board and look forward to his help."

Regan will serve the remainder of Troy's term on the board, which ends with the board election next April. Regan said he plans to seek re-election to the board at that time.

Great, we have filled the vacancy, and approved a tentative budget. Now I see that they have not been able to successfully lease the space in MES. The majority of this community favored the closing of MIS. We went along with the lame excuse that it was more expensive to close it than leave it opened. Now it appears that noone wants to pay to rent space in MES. Isn't it strange that Summit Hill closed a school, eliminated some staff and faculty and leased the building in nothing flat. Maybe if they got rid of the building they wouldn't have to charge for bus service, or at least cut it in half. I think this should be the next step in cutting the budget so taxes aren't raised to the max again and we hear the call for another failed referendum. If we look back, and ask ourselves, did we really need that massive junior high school? It was a gift from the previous board. Thanks a lot.

I don't think that the failure to lease the space falls squarely on the school board, the Park District has a lot to do with it too.

I feel that the decision not to close MIS was the real problem, these leasing items should have been discussed before they made the choice to lease MES space and not close MIS. Another point is that maybe the park district could do the snow removal for the schools in exchange for the use of the building. Then we would not have to buy a new truck. The point I am trying to make is that we do not have enough revenue or students to justify 3 school buildings. I do not see a large increase in student population in the near future either. So what is the delay, we could still close MIS and be done with it. Plain and simple. We need to cut our expenses because people are leaving Mokena because of high taxes. Thank you
