Lincoln-Way Students to Perform Car Safety Checks for Senior Citizens

Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 students are teaming up with area police departments to perform free winter car care check-ups for senior citizens.

Area seniors may take their cars to Lincoln-Way North High School, 19900 S. Harlem Ave., Frankfort, between 11:30 a.m. and 2:52 p.m. Nov. 17 to have their cars looked over by auto mechanic students.

"The inspections will be safety related," said Tony Ogarek, a career and technical teacher at Lincoln-Way North High School. He added students will check everything from car tires and batteries, to belts, hoses, fluids, steering and suspension.

The goal is to give senior citizens an unbiased account of whether their cars are safe for the winter driving season and students an opportunity to hone their newly developed skills.

"We want to keep seniors safe," said Officer Leanne Bender with the Frankfort Police Department.

This is the second year Lincoln-Way High School District 210 has teamed up with the Frankfort/Mokena TRIAD and New Lenox/Manhattan TRIAD to offer the winter car care check-ups for senior citizens.

The TRIAD works to improve the quality of life for senior citizens by providing an opportunity for the exchange of information between law enforcement and older persons.

Last year, senior citizens were invited to take their cars to Lincoln-Way East High School to have their cars inspected.

This year, senior citizens may take their cars to Lincoln-Way North High School where Ogarek, Don Slota and Randy Van Eicken from Master Auto will guide students through the inspections.

Students will work with a check-list, inspecting the cars' headlights, brake lights, back up lights, turn signal lights and fog lights. They'll even checked the cars' windshield wipers to make sure they aren't peeling or torn.

While walk-ins are welcome, senior citizens are encouraged to schedule an appointment ahead of time by contacting Officer Bender at 815-469-9435.

"We don't want their wait to be super long," she said.
