JJC the Overwhelming Top Pick for Area Grads

About 25 percent of recent graduates from New Lenox high schools plan to attend Joliet Junior College next year. See where other students will be studying in the fall.

About a quarter of students who graduated high school in New Lenox will be taking a short trip to college in the fall as they head off to Joliet Junior College.

According to information supplied by Providence Catholic High School and the Lincoln-Way High School District 210, JJC is the overwhelming choice for where area seniors plan to study next year. The data supplied by the schools is not complete, but rather a collection of information shared by students with their guidance offices. It doesn't necessarily account for students who were undecided or not attending higher education institutions.

Overall (all three schools) In-state Out-of-state 1. Joliet Junior College (212) 1. St. Ambrose U. (15) 2. University of Illinois (41) 1. University of Iowa (15) 3. Illinois State (39) 3. Marquette University (11) 3. Lewis University (39) 4. Purdue (10) 5. Loyola U. of Chicago (18)

5. Grand Valley State (9)

Providence submitted 277 students' choices, West had 213 listed and Central had 333, totals off which this data is based. We've rounded up some of the data to show who's going to school for the military or athletics, as well as who the farthest travelers will be.

Military Academies

According to the data, one student from Lincoln-Way Central and one from Providence Catholic will be attending the U.S. Air Force Academy.

One student from Lincoln-Way West and three from Providence were reported to be heading into the U.S. Marine Corps. And one from West was appointed to West Point Academy in New York. Last month, we just before they left for basic training.

Student Athletes

Providence Catholic's incredible run to a second-place finish in the state baseball tournament was a true team effort, and that shows beyond high school—13 recent graduates plan to keep playing ball at the next level.

They aren't the only area students who will balance academics and athletics, though. St. Ambrose University in Iowa, the top out-of-state pick for New Lenox grads, is also the top choice for athletes, with five student-athletes heading there for football, soccer and softball.

Long-Distance Learners

Although a large chunk of students will pursue higher education nearby in Joliet, a number are traveling across the country for school. Here's the top 10, which is, once again, based off the data provided by schools.
