LWASE D843 Students Join Umbrellas for Peace Project

About 40 students and teachers from Pioneer Grove Educational Center in Frankfort opened their self-decorated umbrellas and marched for peace Wednesday along Willow Avenue.

About 40 students and teachers from Lincoln-Way Area Special Education District 843 opened their hearts and umbrellas Wednesday and joined in solidarity with the Lamb's Umbrellas for Peace project.

Lamb's Umbrellas for Peace was initiated after Sept. 11, 2001 to help the people who were affected by the Pentagon tragedy.  Since then, the project has been ongoing in 29 countries with over 2 million participants.

The students from the special needs school, Pioneer Grove Educational Center, 601 Willow St., came outside before the rain started at 1 p.m. Wednesday to march in solidarity with peace lovers.

It took about two months for the students to decorate their umbrellas, said Principal Dianne Bielinski. "They picked their own design," and staff helped them to paint their umbrellas.

The painting of these umbrellas brings victory to each individual and empowers them to step forward with their own voice to symbolize peace and love," said Carol Barber, from LWASE.
