Franceschini was one of four nominees to replace Ventura, board President John Troy said. A frequent attendee of board meetings, Franceschini said his decision to apply was due to what he described as the board's change in direction in recent months.

"I like the direction the board's going and I want to help it continue in that direction," Franceschini said.

Franceschini cited two recent board actions as particularly encouraging to him: and .

Franceschini is a 15-year resident of Mokena and father of three daughters who went through District 159 schools. His two youngest still attend .

Citing Franceschini's technological expertise, board member Scott Peters stepped down from his position on the Technology Committee to make way for Franceschini's appointment. Franceschini is a business programmer analyst for Southern Wine and Spirits of Illinois.

One decision Franceschini hasn't made if he'll run for the seat in 2013, when Ventura's term was to expire.

"If I make a decisive impact and can be of service, I will," he said.

Sounds like a great choice. Congrats to the Board for making another good decision. You people really have it together. Keep up the good work for this community.

Not really sure how I feel. I do know that the board needs to figure out what is going on with MIS and the teachers contracts and worry about the children in the school and stop worrying about where the next cut is coming from. We have lost a lot of good teachers and staff because of all of these cuts. The children are suffering from all of this.

I also think that Carrie Zakula should have been on the board. If anyone, she deserves it.

I agree that Zakula should have been selected, especially since she garnered so much support from the community and she would be the only person on the board with an educational background (to the best of my knowledge). I will never understand why people try so hard to elect school board members who have no background in the fieldof education. Actually, I believe that in many cases the people who are so against electing educators to a school board have ulterior motives which they rarely admit to. With that said, best of luck to Mark and may he serve the community while keeping the children and the school district in mind first and foremost.
