Teachers Union and D159 Weigh In On Teacher Contract: What's Your Vote?

The Mokena Teachers Association and District 159 both praise the new teacher contract signed Saturday. What do you think?

Mokena teachers will be getting raises over the next few years, but not to the levels they've seen in the past.

After months of contentious debate, the teachers union and signed a new, three-year contract Saturday morning.

The contract offers a pay freeze this year, a 2-percent raise next school year and a 2.5-percent raise the following year, compared to the yearly 5-percent raises offered in the five-year contract that expired over the summer.

"I feel it's a fair contract considering the economic reality we're in," board President John Troy said.

Union representatives praised the existence of the deal. Teachers have been working without a contract since summer.

"For our part, we are pleased to finally have an agreement," MTA spokesman Craig Martinus said.
